King will have to play its most important game of the season Friday night without its starting quarterback.
Sophomore Greg Windham suffered a cut on his throwing arm during last Friday’s loss to Tampa Bay Tech, and the injury will keep him out of the Lions’ big district game this week against East Bay, King coach Alvin Davis said Tuesday afternoon. King needs a victory over East Bay to keep its playoff hopes alive.
Davis said Windham was injured while he was being tackled by a Titans defender. Davis said a metal clasp on the opposing players’ helmet was the cause for the gash, which occurred on Windham’s throwing (right) arm and required 22 stitches to close.
Davis said Windham, who has thrown for six touchdowns and rushed for another this season, also will likely miss King’s Oct. 30 matchup against Bloomingdale. The coach is hopeful is signal caller can return Nov. 6 against Hillsborough, barring any setbacks.
Junior Reese Sturgis will move from his receiver position to quarterback in place of Windham, Davis said. Sturgis, who was King’s starting quarterback in 2008 before a broken arm cut short his season, was penciled in as the Lions’ starting quarterback in 2009 before Windham transferred into the program during the summer.
