It’s been a pretty good couple of weeks of the golf course for King rising senior Kelsey Gibson.
A week ago, Gibson managed to tie for fifth at the Florida Women’s State Golf Association amateur stroke play championship in Sarasota. And on Thursday, she earned a one-stroke victory at the 30th annual Marvin DeBolt Daily News Junior Golf Classic in Fort Walton Beach.
In her recent triumph, Gibson shot rounds of 69 and 68 at Fort Walton Beach Pines to hold off Gulf Breeze’s Sarah Hicks, the tournament champ the previous two years.
Prior to that win, Gibson shot rounds of 72, 71 and 82 on the par-72 West course at Laurel Oak Country Club for a 9-over total 225 at the FWSGA amateur championship, which left her in a three-way tie for fifth, 11 strokes back of winner Alexandria Buelow of Palm City.
Gibson was one of several current and former Hillsborough County girls golfers in the 63-player field at FWSGA event. Also in the tournament, held July 10-12, were current Durant standout Madison Opfer, and former county golfers Amy West (Durant), Jessica Alexander (Newsome) and Mackenzie Puryear (Plant).
West also managed a top 10 finish, tying for 10th after shooting 12-over 228 (77-75-76). Opfer tied for 17th (81-78-75-234), Alexander finished 22nd (82-75-78-235), and Puryear tied for 40th (83-84-81-248).
In addition, former Pasco County standout Emily Van Etten (Mitchell) tied for 23rd after shooting 78-82-77-237.
