The Richmond Kickers and Arizona Suhuaros were the only two teams to cause upsets in the opening round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night, but some other teams, including Miami FC, had close calls before advancing to the second round.
USL-2 Richmond earned a 1-0 overtime victory against the USSF Division II’s Crystal Palace Baltimore, Matthew Delicate scoring with just a minute to play as the game seemed headed to a penalty shootout. The Kickers will face fellow USL-2 side the Real Maryland Monarchs, who also needed extra time before earning a 2-1 win against USL Premier Development League side Reading United.
Arizona was the only true amateur team to advance, defeating the PDL’s Ventura County Fusion 4-2 in a penalty shootout after the two teams had played to a 1-1 tied through regulation and overtime. The Suhuaros get to travel to face the USSF Division II leading Austin Aztex in the second round, the Aztex cruising past the DFW Tornadoes 3-0, Jamie Watson scoring twice.
Aside from Baltimore, all of the other USSF Division II sides advanced, although Miami left it late against the Central Florida Kraze. Paulo Araujo Jr. came through in the end, though, scoring four goals in the final 10 minutes of overtime to earn his side a 5-1 victory.
The next round will be played on Tuesday, with the eight winners advancing to face Major League Soccer opposition in the third round.

The 3-0 win over Legends FC was good to see as they dominated throughout. It’s pretty fitting that they’ll have to play Miami FC for the chance at an MLS team. Let’s hope they pull it out and that Andrew Nestor is able to successfully bid for that game!

I’m not sure exactly how it works, but there is a process where the USOC directors decide where a game is being played. Nestor decided not to host either the first or second round, but said he’d be interested in the third round. I’m not sure if the bid deals with money or just making the best case to hold the game in a given location. Do you know the details, Nick?

I think we’ll know more when we know which teams are slotted to face which in the third round.
The interesting thing, as I think I pointed out in a previous post, is that should the Rowdies win against Miami, the game before the third round would be in Portland on a Sunday evening. That’s a tough travel schedule if they’re going to be coming back to face an MLS squad two days later.
