TAMPA - Tampa Bay is currently one of five teams interested in Detroit free agent RB Kevin Jones.
Jones is recovering from knee surgery he had five months ago and recently Miami, Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Detroit reportedly sent representatives to watch him workout on Monday in Saline, Mich. Tampa Bay was not one of the teams in attendance.
Currently Jones is training in Arizona and preparing for this season.
Last year, Jones missed the first two games as he recovered from a foot injury that also sidelined him for the last three games of 2006. He ran for at least 70 yards in five games, including a season-high 105 against Chicago, before hurting his knee Dec. 23 against the Chiefs. He finished with 153 carries for 581 yards and eight touchdowns in 13 games. A few months after the season, Detroit released him.
So far, Tampa Bay has not offered Jones a contract, but are keeping tabs on his progress. It is highly questionable if Tampa Bay would actually sign Jones after recently giving RB Earnest Graham a contract extension, resigning Michael Bennett, acquiring Warrick Dunn, plus the possibility of Cadillac Williams returning this year. The Bucs could just be gauging Jones’ health for now and the running back will likely not sign until the end of July, when teams start training camp.

I agree too. Just makes no sense. And Portland, can we stop picking on spelling and grammar. It doesn’t matter, like this rumor.

wade less, I whole-heartedly agree. Like I wrote earlier, this just seems like a fairly weak “rumor.” The type of thing where some reporter heard a Buc official/coach say “Kevin Jones” - and all of a sudden we’re interested.
All things being equal, we’ve got 3 solid RBs on the payroll right now, plus two young kids [Boyd/Darby]. Adding Kevin Jones would be a waste, no matter how cheap he’s willing to play.
This won’t happen!

this story seems weak. if the Bucs are keeping tabs, why didn’t they have a rep in attendance to view his workout? with Bennett, Dunn and Graham I just don’t see the need at this point. I do like Jones though. If we do pick him up I think that definitely says Caddy won’t be back until ‘09.

It never hurts to keep options open. Love the critics…if the bucs do nothing they are cheap. If they explore options they are morons. It is time that some “fans” give Gruden and Allen a bit of credit!

When I heard about this I was shocked! How many dang RBs does this team need. Unless we plan to run the ball on EVERY SINGLE play, nobody needs this many guys in the backfield. I know that. You know that. And, most importantly, Allen and Gruden know that. This story, my friends, is nothing more than a rumor. Sure, we’re “following his progress,” but that doesn’t mean we have any intention of signing this kid. I live Kevin Jones, but we don’t need another RB.

This wold make up one hell of a back field. it would also mean we probably wont see williams this year. We would also have some serious trade bait if everyone performs well.

Pretty soon the bucs will have enough RB’s and QB’s to field an entire team.

this is a legit story….so simmer down dude. Kevin Jones is very talented. Adding him a to our running attack would be a great move. RB’s get injured. if Graham goes down or isn’t as good as he looked last year we have Dunn and that’s it - love Dunn but as a great compliment and match up RB not a starter. I like the addition of Jones. Bring back the full house backfield formation but base it on speed and not power…that’s a look that would eat up alot of opposing defensive preparation time….

We don’t need him. We are already set a RB.

with the way our backfield got hurt with injuries last year…y not have 4 solid backs…what can it hurt…let caddie keep rehabing and let him get 100 percent b4 he hits the field again…i think it would make a good tandam in the backfield…and shawn…this was actually reported by CNNSI.COM…i wrote a note to the tribe to have them look into it….GO BUCS!
