TAMPA – Left cornerback Brian Kelly, limited to only two starts last season because of a toe injury that required surgery, made a surprise appearance at Tuesday’s voluntary workout session and promptly doused any speculation that he plans to hold out during training camp.
Kelly, 31, has two years remaining on his contract with the Bucs, whose defense weakened significantly when Kelly suffered a pectoral strain in 2003 and a toe injury in 2006.
“I’ll be here and I’m here,’’ Kelly said when asked if he planned to attend the team’s mandatory minicamp next month. “This is Tampa and unfortunately it’s very boring right now. There’s nothing going on but football and all you get to do is speculate about the Bucs. I’m the guy who gets speculated on.’’
But when asked whether he would like a new contract, Kelly didn’t hesitate.
“That would be nice,’’ he said before downplaying any chance of a holdout in Lake Buena Vista when camp opens July 26. “I don’t play that game. That doesn’t get you where you need to get and I understand that. I’m tired of the speculation.’’
Kelly, who traditionally skips voluntary OTA sessions to be with his family out West, began light jogging in December and said he can now run without pain.
“Am I 100 percent? I don’t need to be right now,’’ he said. “I’m here trying to get some work in with the guys and I feel pretty good. Surgery went well. They went in there and did what they needed to do.’’
On Tuesday, the Bucs signed C.J. Leak, a former quarterback at Wake Forest and Tennessee who will be given a look as a tight end. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound prospect is the older brother of quarterback Chris Leak, who led the Gators to a national championship last year before signing with the Bears after the draft.
Tampa Bay also released cornerback Kenny Scott.

What a jerk.

A healthy BK is a very good thing for the Bucs D! Going through the season with Torrie Cox/Phillip Buchanan as the starter is downright frightening.

Make no mistake about it, Brian Kelly is an awsome cornerback but not as good as Barber. Since when does Barber ever have help up top Jim? I mean, the guy is stellar and a first-ballot hall of famer, no doubt. Twenty sacks and twenty interceptions, the first and only player to ever accomplish those stats, come on, the guy is amazing. That being said, having BK back on the field will only help Barber add to those stats.

i think Kelly will get a new contract but i think it will be with another team next year. i am happy to see him in camp but as we try to get younger, how much more can he realy play

Even with a good pass rush in 03 against the colts(well, there was no pass rush that game) they lost when he went down. Now the rush isn’t as good as it once was and you don’t think we need him? If I had to watch Bolden one more game, I was going puke. Kelly is the best db we have. Like it or not. Barber plays better on the inside and gets pushed around too easy when he doesn’t have the help up top. Welcome back 25 and hope you get your $$ or we get a stellar performance out of the front 4!!!!!

Props to Kelly participating in the voluntary workouts. We need him back and hopefully he will be healthy the whole year. If he does good, then they can talk about a contract. You earn what your worth…man opening day is taking FOREVER!!! GO BUCS!

Brian Kelly isn’t a lockdown corner, but he is good enough. The guy can play and I think he is the best pass cover cornerback on the roster. And that says alot because Barber is no joke. The Bucs will be rock solid at the corners with Brian back on the field. If either of those guys had the speed of Deion Sanders, they would be dangerous with the other skills they already possess. Welcome back Brian, we missed you and we really need you.

Kelly doesn’t sound too happy! I hope he can come back to prove he should have a new contract. As of right now, NO! Maybe, come in and play the whole year could warrent a new contract.

Tyler, I agree with your comments about Barber except for the one where you say “20 sacks and twenty interceptions, the first and only player to accomplish those stats”....not so. He is the first and only CORNERBACK to accomplish these stats!
