ST. PETERSBURG - Rays outfielder Gabe Kapler was placed on the 15-day disabled list this afternoon because of a right hip flexor strain.
Justin Ruggiano is on his way from Durham and should be here for the game.
Kapler is batting .217 with one home run and eight RBIs. That includes a .215 mark against left-handers.
Ruggiano followed up a terrific spring training in major league camp by hitting .291 with four homers and 19 RBI for the Bulls.
This move helps the Rays buy some time on making the decision on what to do when Jason Bartlett comes off the disabled list, which could happen Tuesday. The Rays don’t have to send out a catcher. They can simply send Ruggiano back to Durham.
