ST. PETERSBURG The non-waiver trade deadline passed without the Rays making any more deals other than the one this morning with the Diamondbacks for RHP Chad Qualls.
Qualls is here and ready to play tonight.
He said his poor numbers are the result of knee surgery last September that messed with his mechanics this season. He said he feels he solved that problem.
A sinkerball pitcher capable of getting a strikeout, Qualls should benefit from pitching in front of his new infield.
Any moves the Rays will make between now and Aug. 31—the deadline to set postseason rosters—will include players who have passed through waivers. That could be a tricky deal since waiver claims go from the worst team to the best team, meaning almost every playoff contender can put in a claim and block the Rays from getting a player.
