Julia Jones of Largo came from a set down, and won the last three games of the third set to defeat Jennifer Pfeifler of Gulf Breeze 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the final of the USTA National Open under-16 championship in Montgomery, Ala. on Tuesday.
With the third set on serve, Jones trailed 5-4. Pfeifler had two match points at 15-40, but Jones fought back to extend the match before she broke Pfeifler in the 11th game of the set and holding serve to close out the match. After Pfeifler had defeated her in the Gulfstream Designated championship in May, Jones was pleased to come back to advance to the final.
“I had to really focus to get it back,” Jones said. “I was nervous, because I had never beaten her before, but I knew I was going to be able to. She’s a really good player, but I felt like I was going to be able to do really well.”
Jones will face Nicole Melichar of Stuart in the final on Wednesday. Jones said she is anticipating a good game, but thinks she had the strategy to win.
“I’m feeling confident,” Jones said. “I was watching her match and I saw how she plays, so I’m feeling confident about [Wednesday].”
Rebecca Bodine of Tarpon Springs reached the final of the under-18 USTA National Open in Tallahassee with a 6-1, 6-3 against Danielle Collins of St. Petersburg on Tuesday afternoon.
Bodine defeated Collins the last time they faced competitively last August, and reached her first under-18 division final of the year with the win. She will face the tournament No.1 seed Rachel Saiontz of Miami in the final, looking to add to the Florida State Closed Designated under-16 title she won early in June.
