While some Buc fans may be thrilled that Tampa Bay failed to land Brett Favre on Wednesday, the franchise suffered a major blow in prestige when the Green Bay icon was instead traded to the Jets.
In effect, the Bucs just suffered their first loss of 2008.
Tampa Bay officials went to bed Tuesday night believing the Bucs were in prime position to satisfy Green Bay’s compensation demands and introduce Favre to the Bay area by the end of the week. Once Favre backed off his original demands of playing for either the Packers or the Vikings, Tampa Bay figured it held most of the significant cards in a potential high-stakes game vs. the Jets.
The Bucs won the NFC South last season while the Jets were awful in the AFC East, where New England has ruled during Tom Brady’s long run. Tampa Bay plays in the weaker NFC and the Buc defense is far superior to New York’s, theoretically giving Favre a better chance to play in the Super Bowl if he chose pewter.
The Bucs had more space under the cap than the Jets and could more easily afford Favre’s exorbitant salary. Tampa Bay’s West Coast offense appeared to be a better fit for Favre than New York’s attack, while Favre’s relationship with Jon Gruden was also considered an advantage for the Bucs.
But all those playing chips weren’t enough late Wednesday evening as Favre spurned the Bucs in favor of an AFC lightweight.
The decision was particularly galling for the Glazers, who have a history of getting what they want. Tampa Bay’s owners had proved their determination in the past by successfully going after the Buc franchise, securing Gruden’s services in 2002 and purchasing Manchester United, the world’s most popular soccer club.
In failing to land Favre, the Bucs must now regroup behind wounded leader Jeff Garcia, whose confidence has been eroded by Tampa Bay’s efforts to replace him as the franchise’s starting quarterback. And don’t forget, Garcia is still disgruntled about his contract situation, even while he recovers from a calf strain suffered a week ago.
With the regular season only a month away, the Bucs have to be concerned that their failed pursuit of Favre will have a lasting effect on the man entrusted to run Gruden’s offense.
Tampa Bay will undoubtedly say the franchise is anxious to turn the page, but the failure to consummate a deal with Favre could have lasting repercussions.

The only way the Bucs win here is if Farve gets hurt. The damage done by openly shopping for Farve will not soon be repaired. If you want to make a statement step up to the plate and deliver. Nobody remembers who came in 2nd place. I do not want to hear any complaints from ownership about poor ticket sales or an under achieving season. You had your options and failed to deliver! While you were sleeping the Jets delivered. WAKE UP!

Ira; was it you who wrote,“Buc’s are on the Verge of signing Farve” and I asked you to site your source, because you were way off base? I can’t believe that you have the audacity to write an article like this justifying your position on your soothsaying comment. Not only did you do that but because of your article; you had the whole football world believing that Farve was coming to Tampa. They plastered your comments all over ESPN, NFL Network and every other sports related computer, magazine and tv in the free world. This is monumental piece of literary crap and you need to be fired at once. I can’t see how you can remain employed with the Tribune after this. We all knew it; and now you just proved it; you are a PUTZZZZZZZ!

Ahw, too bad Buc fans… I guess you won’t have a chance to be playoff contenders after all. But, hey, there’s always next year’s draft!
I wouldn’t worry too much over Garcia; he will probably not be able to play after game 1 anyway. But that’s all good because Griese and Favre play a lot a like; they throw lots on interceptions. So, you might get ‘Favre’ anyway.

I see a couple of things that need to be explained to Garcia - you have to tell him - what did you want us to do - the guys a legend - your not - not yet anyway. (motivation for Garcia to go out and kick butt - (to prove his worth) We offered a 7th rouond conditional pick for Farve - why? Because we didn’t really want him! Now Jeff - go out there and play your cahones off! Or you could be replaced. This is a business, a dictatorship - either you play or you get traded. That’s life Jeff - now - go out there and play and prove we made the right choice in not bringing in Farve.

If Favre paid any attention to the media (and you know he did), he knows about Chris Simms and Jeff Garcia’s experience with Gruden and co. That’s why he chose the Jets over the Bucs, and I don’t blame him. Favre wants to play, not to walk into the hive that is the Tampa Bay QB position.

Ira was right…we were on the verge of getting the deal done. There was just one problem - one that nobody could have predicted. Green Bay, all along, wanted a potential 1st round pick for Favre - something that Tampa simply wasn’t willing to give up. Unfortunately, the Jets were willing to do it at the 11th hour. The terms of the trade would give G.B. a 1st round pick if Favre takes 80%+ of the snaps and the team makes the playoffs. Chances are, Favre and the Jets will meet both of those conditions - so G.B. gets what they alway wanted.
The Jets were willing to mortgage their future to rent a QB for a year or two. Tampa wasn’t! I’m just fine with that. to me, this deal was never worth more than a 2nd rounder.

I am not overly hurt but Garcia is not the answer. He is often hurt and our backups are 3rd rate. We need a franchise QB that is in it for the long haul. Maybe next year until then Lets Play Some FOOTBALL! We can only get behind our team and QB and know our defense will carry the load. (again)
Suggest removalPor (Mike Damone) on August 07, 2008 (Suggest removal)
EXACTLY what I expected. The Trib writers would blast the Bucs because the writers got it wrong….again. Blasting the Bucs because they refused to be hoodwinked into giving up too much for a guy who has been sitting on his rear instead of working with a team in OTAs (the only reason he rebounded last year was he in fact busted his butt in last year’s OTAs - something he had not done the previous few years and was terrible). You watch, Garcia will handle himslef like a pro and not throw blame at anyone. The only people throwing blame will be the silly amateur Tribune writers and all because they got it wrong. You sissies are going to throw Gruden under the bus because he’s always been the easy target for you clowns.

Roland C. Woltman; That was freaking hysterical! Way funnier than this Favre nonsense.
Suggest removalPor (Shawn Golan) on August 07, 2008 (Suggest removal)
Slick, just for your info…Favre CHOSE nothing! It was Green Bay that CHOSE to accept the Jets offer. all Favre had to do with it was say he would accept a trade to the Jets…which he did. In the end, Favre had very little say in where he ended up.
so…don’t run off at the mouth if you’ve got no clue what you’re talking about. I see you needed to take this opportunity to trash talk the staff…fine. But do that when there is a reason to. Instead of making a point, you made yourself sound ignorant.

Smack Down! Let the reporters stick to pure facts. Their opinions are forevermore worthless! Gruden and Allen have just had their butts kicked with the whole country watching. So, what else is new? TBay is a rebuilding team. So, let’s get on with it. Play Simms and the other young guys and draft a top QB in 2009 for the future. Let the older heroes diminish during their last year and save their strength in case we make it to the playoffs. Concentrate on improving a mediocre O-line and D-line.Don’t be fooled by laST year. We had the 3rd weakest schedule in NFL and finished barely over .500 in the weakest division. Lots of room for improvement on the team and the front office.

Well I have to say that I thought the sources were clear that we were going to have Favre in Tampa Bay. But now its offical that the Jets got Favre which I thought that Tampa was close to get Favre until the Jets came in with the better option. Which its alright I mean we can always go to the Superbowl without him, We do still have Garcia in the mix and still the leader so what we must do now is to get him the contract what he desire. He deserved it after winning the division title and actually close to go to the superbowl. So I say give Garcia the contract for what deserve!

Ira Kaufmann is a joke. Now he is pissed his story was not even close to accurate. How can you say Favre spurned the Bucs? It was the Packers that chose the Jets, not Favre. You guys seriously grt paid to “report” this mis-information? You’re an embarassment…thank god the internet provides all the sports info I need.

I just watched a clip of an interview with Chris Mortenson of ESPN. He basically said that through last night, Favre WANTED to come to Tampa…the he thought the bucs were the better and “safer” choice. Unfortunately, he had very little say in the matter. The Jets jumped in with a pumped up offer and won the deal.
I’ll say it again…Tampa was smart not to go overboard for this thing. For the first time ever - my hat goes off to Bruce Allen for NOT being aggressive.

The Bucs Management failed again. The Jets played Bruce Allen because they knew it wouldn’t be hard to out bid him. The Tampa sports market, and the Tampa Bay area in general, really needed this boost from the Favre excitement. What’s wrong with giving up a conditional 4th rounder, up to a 1st if the Bucs went to the Super Bowl. Isn’t that the point, to get to the Super Bowl. Is this super star 4th-1st rounder that we get to keep going to bring us to TWO Super Bowls? Bruce Allen failed, and the Bucs proved again that we will always be an “expansion franchise” in the NFL. Thank you for raising ticket prices too. The Bucs deserve every empty seat this year and can only blame themselves!

Shawn G. Your right on the money. The cost was too high to bring Farve to Tampa. We have a QB, as a matter of fact we have several QB’s that can win for us. We even have some QB’s were trying to move. Farve albeit is an upgrade over Garcia but Garcia is more mobile than Farve and he throws less INT’s. He also throws less TD’s but an INT will kill you faster. Allen and management did the right thing here - so give them some credit. This doesn’t knock us out of the drivers seat it just makes the seat a little less comfortable. I would have liked to see Farve here too - but it is what it is so lets go on and play some football.

given the anamosity that exists between the packers’ brass and #4, does anyone really think that they wouldn’t chose the team that would give favre the LEAST chance to succeed?? if the packers were willing to give him $20 million not to play, they certainly would be willing to take an inferior offer to increase the possibility that brett will spend most of the season at the bottom of a sack pile…this way, no matter how rodgers plays, they feel confident that favre will play worse…

Tony Dungy built a Superbowl contender, the Glazers thought it was best to replace him, in comes Gruden and wins with Tony’s boys, in comes Allen and it’s been down hill from there. Need anything else be said.

To all you crybabies out there, we are better off not having Brett Favre. To give up potential high end picks for a guy who is no younger than our current starter and up until last year, not a real factor. If the Packers didn’t get to the NFC Championship game last year, this would not have been a big deal. Favre throws way too many interceptions and does not move as well as Garcia. Sure he throws the ball farther and has a stronger arm, but big deal. Garcia took a 5-11 team to the playoffs in one year and made the Pro-Bowl. Think about what he can do with a better O-Line and running game and deeper receivers. We’re fine without Favre and we get to keep our picks.

Let’s not forget, Farve is a country boy. He like those days plowing the field, riding onb his tractor and raising horses. He’ll live in NJ. Have you ever been to NJ? They’ve got some nice farming areas with lots of room. Farve will buy a nice farm house, a couple of tractors, a nice bunch of horses and play farm boy when he’s not slinging a football around. But the JETS better hurry up on that stadium - because Farve’s ego will not fit in the Giants/Jets lockeroom.

Papa John,
the guys you metioned in your list were all guys we would have had to trade for with the exception of Moss. Trading the future for bandaides doesn’t usually help unless you are 1 piece away from a title and you can afford to trade picks. Randy Moss wasn’t leaving the comfort of NE, so he was a non-factor. We are ABSOLUTELY fine without Favre. I love Garcia and what he brings to the team and he knows the offense like his own name. He is the perfect fit for our offense, Favre isn’t, and Garcia was a pro-bowl QB for us. When was the last time a bucs QB made the pro-bowl. We did the right thing.
