While some Buc fans may be thrilled that Tampa Bay failed to land Brett Favre on Wednesday, the franchise suffered a major blow in prestige when the Green Bay icon was instead traded to the Jets.
In effect, the Bucs just suffered their first loss of 2008.
Tampa Bay officials went to bed Tuesday night believing the Bucs were in prime position to satisfy Green Bay’s compensation demands and introduce Favre to the Bay area by the end of the week. Once Favre backed off his original demands of playing for either the Packers or the Vikings, Tampa Bay figured it held most of the significant cards in a potential high-stakes game vs. the Jets.
The Bucs won the NFC South last season while the Jets were awful in the AFC East, where New England has ruled during Tom Brady’s long run. Tampa Bay plays in the weaker NFC and the Buc defense is far superior to New York’s, theoretically giving Favre a better chance to play in the Super Bowl if he chose pewter.
The Bucs had more space under the cap than the Jets and could more easily afford Favre’s exorbitant salary. Tampa Bay’s West Coast offense appeared to be a better fit for Favre than New York’s attack, while Favre’s relationship with Jon Gruden was also considered an advantage for the Bucs.
But all those playing chips weren’t enough late Wednesday evening as Favre spurned the Bucs in favor of an AFC lightweight.
The decision was particularly galling for the Glazers, who have a history of getting what they want. Tampa Bay’s owners had proved their determination in the past by successfully going after the Buc franchise, securing Gruden’s services in 2002 and purchasing Manchester United, the world’s most popular soccer club.
In failing to land Favre, the Bucs must now regroup behind wounded leader Jeff Garcia, whose confidence has been eroded by Tampa Bay’s efforts to replace him as the franchise’s starting quarterback. And don’t forget, Garcia is still disgruntled about his contract situation, even while he recovers from a calf strain suffered a week ago.
With the regular season only a month away, the Bucs have to be concerned that their failed pursuit of Favre will have a lasting effect on the man entrusted to run Gruden’s offense.
Tampa Bay will undoubtedly say the franchise is anxious to turn the page, but the failure to consummate a deal with Favre could have lasting repercussions.

Get used to disappoint douche bags. 7-9 for your overrated franchise this year.

so who declared Tampa Bay the center of the universe?
get over yourself man, it’s not as GREAT there as you think it is. i would rather play in NY then Tampa as well.

Well this is embarrassing Ira; a sour grapes response, hours before Allen’s press conference no less, trashing the team because they did not do your bidding? Hunter S. Thompson is dead. But well before he took himself out he questioned the long term relevance and consequences of “Gonzo” journalism. It was never about what Ira Kaufman wanted it was about what was best for this franchise. Nick Pugliese never had such hubris.

wow! All some of you people ever want to do is talk trash. Okay, so Ira got the story wrong! Big woop! Heck, I got the story wrong - I was 99% sure that Favre was coming to Tampa [as was almost everyone else]. It’s okay…I don’t need the guys’ job for making that report!
As far as Ira trying to spin this into something negative…well…who cares. Clearly, NONE of the reports for TBO know a whole lot about football - beyond playing a little in high school. For some reason, these guys think they know about players’ thoughts - they don’t. Ira…stick to reporting the news and minimize reporting your opinions on other people.

Ira, Ira, Ira. When are you going to learn? Or really, when are the editors of the Tampa Trib going to learn? Sorry Bruce Allen didn’t tell you all along how the process was going (like your boy McKay would have), so you jumped the gun. “It’s a done deal.” Never said by Bucs people, but you made your story, now you have to sleep with it. Good day not to be Ira. When exactly are writers EVER held accountable? Players get cut, coaches get fired, writers just keep on doing what they do. Wrong, wrong, wrong…at least you are consistant.

Favre will not make the Jets better than the Patriots. So no Superbowl for Brett this year, probaly not even the playoffs. So I predict the Jets will lose their 2nd round pick, then Favre retires next year. Thanks for visiting New York Brett. Glad you did not take your 1 year circus here in Tampa.

I can’t belive Ira Kaufman and Roy Cummings still have a job!! If I was the owner of the Tampa Tribune they would be FIRED as of yesterday! Ira just knew from is sources Brett Favre would be a BUC. How stupid do you feel now #####_ _ _ _? Get A life!!

Ira Kaufman is a hack and Roy Cummings is an idiot, we have a wonderful staff of writers in TB. You ever watch them being interviewed on the News? It’s hilarious how pompous they are. Ira looks better suited driving a taxi up here in New York and Roy could very easily be working as an assistant manager for the deli department at Publix. I’m not sure what their history is or where the were before coming to the tampa trib, but they are wrong more times than the weather man. It makes me laugh.

Ira, I have a good friend who is also one of your ex-editors. She moved over here to Palm Beach County - she also concludes - Your a Putz and should be fired. Journalist? I would let you write for a high school newspaper! Have fun in your new job!!!

Only, the only thing mediocre here is your use of the English Language. Get over yourself you ignorant loser.

Tampa is full of losers. This move is is going to come back and hurt the bucs when Garcia goes down at around week 5 and the ever-so-graceful Brian Griese steps in. Chris Simms…if you are listening…run to Dallas now! At lease you can still get a Super Bowl ring by sitting on the bench. The Bucs love to be mediocre and that is exactly what the QB situation is here…mediocre. The Bucs have all that money left under the cap and the only person they have signed of signifigance is Antonio Bryant. HA!...HA!...HA!!!!!

You started this circus so dont backtrack now. You call yourself a reporter…. You and your so called sources have no clue.

You journalist (lol snicker snicker) actually make Steve Duemig look smart
Nice accurate reporting Ira

When the Boston Herald got the “Pats taped the Rams’ walkthrough” story wrong, the writer came back later and put together a lengthy feature explaining how he put the story together and apologizing profusely for violating everyone’s trust.
When Ira Kaufman gets the “Favre to Bucs is almost a done deal” story wrong, he writes a turgid little blog entry blaming the Bucs for not getting the deal done and making him a prophet.
Tampa Bay - demand better from your local media. Hold them accountable.

Fire Ira!!!
Posted by Cas Lehmkuhler, on 08/07 at 11:54 AM
If the Glazers wanted Bret, they would have gotten him. Ira is the only wounded person here. Sometimes it is hard to save face.
Posted by gary, on 08/07 at 11:51 AM
Problem was with the Buc’s GM.
Buc’s Owner should fire him for losing out on Brett. He tried to play hardball and lost.
Brett would have been great with the team.

This had very little to do with what Favre or Tampa wanted. This was about what G.B. decided. The Jets offered a better chance at a higher pick. Most reports put tampa’s best offer at a flat 3rd rounder + a player. The jets offered a conditional pick that is likely to turn into a 2nd rounder, or 3rd at the least. G.B. got better value from the Jets, so that’s why they pulled the trigger there.
Conditional picks, like flat picks, are based on how well a team plays. G.B. knew that a pick from Tampa was likely to be in the 20s even without Favre. With him, in the high 20s or even 30s. The Jets offer something in the mid to high teens - its simple math. Jets offered better value…plus, they won’t have to play vs. Favre.

Way to bury the lede, Ira. Which is:
YOU WERE WRONG.
WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.
Instead of admitting it, you slander everyone you can think of.
You get paid to do this?

This article is a joke. I can’t believe the number of erroneous conclusions that Kaufman is trying to jam down our throats. Regarding the idea that Favre somehow “rejected” Tampa Bay - he had no veto or approval vote in this whole thing. He’s not a member of Packers management. Remember, if he had his druthers, he’d still be a Packer or, if not, a Viking. And, to insinuate that this whole process has damaged the Bucs’ and Garcia’s confidence somehow? Garcia has been in this too long to not realize that this is just part of the deal when it comes to playing in the NFL. It might have been a distraction, but it’s over now and everyone will be the professionals they are and do their jobs.

Ira - your an #####! Not only did you blow this whole thing way out of proportion by say we were on the verge of signing Farve and getting the whole worlds attention looking for Farve to come here only to have it slapped in our face when he didn’t. But then you write that Farve spurned us. What a dip! We never had a legit offer on the table for Farve. As Bruce Allen said - we can’t control what comes out of the media. Ira - he means you!! You will never be allowed in the lockeroom again, let alone the shower to serve as a scrub boy. I for one am calling for your JOB!! Irresponsible reporting at best. National Enquirer writer at the least.

I just read Ira’s column and would like to have him on our ESPN Radio show in MD to discuss what happened with Favre. We are on from 1-4pm and would like Ira at 2pm, 2:40, 3 or 3:20. Please email back or call my cell at 202-309-1637 to set up a time.
Thanks,
Shan

I agree, a particularly poor piece of writing by a normally fairly decent writer. I think all these media yokels wanted #4 in town, makes for easy copy. Bucs will be OK, not having Favre and the media circus will make for a more focused football team.
Posted by Khedric, Orlando, FL on 08/07 at 11:08 AM
Ira,
If you can’t write one positve report than you need to be FIRED!!! Go to the Saint Pete Times and join all the other Gruden and Bruce Allen bashers over there.

I was just waiting to hear after watching the Rangers finnaly lost to the
Yankees in game 3. I really though that Farve was gonna be a Buc. Well Now, Tampa will have to regroup and take a real look at the Qb’s behind Garcia, Now. First of All we Need to pay Garcia whats he been asking since he was chosen to Replace you know Who in the ProBowl last Year(Brett Farve). I hope the coaching gives all the Qb’s. Like Rotate all the QB’s each Pre-season.
Like Pre-Season 2. Start Griese,Simms,McGown with Garcia plays 4th QTR. etc
