Jets outflank Bucs for Favre’s services

Posted Aug 7, 2008 by Ira Kaufman

Updated Aug 6, 2008 at 11:46 PM

While some Buc fans may be thrilled that Tampa Bay failed to land Brett Favre on Wednesday, the franchise suffered a major blow in prestige when the Green Bay icon was instead traded to the Jets.

In effect, the Bucs just suffered their first loss of 2008.

Tampa Bay officials went to bed Tuesday night believing the Bucs were in prime position to satisfy Green Bay’s compensation demands and introduce Favre to the Bay area by the end of the week. Once Favre backed off his original demands of playing for either the Packers or the Vikings, Tampa Bay figured it held most of the significant cards in a potential high-stakes game vs. the Jets.

The Bucs won the NFC South last season while the Jets were awful in the AFC East, where New England has ruled during Tom Brady’s long run. Tampa Bay plays in the weaker NFC and the Buc defense is far superior to New York’s, theoretically giving Favre a better chance to play in the Super Bowl if he chose pewter.

The Bucs had more space under the cap than the Jets and could more easily afford Favre’s exorbitant salary. Tampa Bay’s West Coast offense appeared to be a better fit for Favre than New York’s attack, while Favre’s relationship with Jon Gruden was also considered an advantage for the Bucs.

But all those playing chips weren’t enough late Wednesday evening as Favre spurned the Bucs in favor of an AFC lightweight.

The decision was particularly galling for the Glazers, who have a history of getting what they want. Tampa Bay’s owners had proved their determination in the past by successfully going after the Buc franchise, securing Gruden’s services in 2002 and purchasing Manchester United, the world’s most popular soccer club.

In failing to land Favre, the Bucs must now regroup behind wounded leader Jeff Garcia, whose confidence has been eroded by Tampa Bay’s efforts to replace him as the franchise’s starting quarterback. And don’t forget, Garcia is still disgruntled about his contract situation, even while he recovers from a calf strain suffered a week ago.

With the regular season only a month away, the Bucs have to be concerned that their failed pursuit of Favre will have a lasting effect on the man entrusted to run Gruden’s offense.

Tampa Bay will undoubtedly say the franchise is anxious to turn the page, but the failure to consummate a deal with Favre could have lasting repercussions.

Ira, Ira, Ira.  When are you going to learn?  Or really, when are the editors of the Tampa Trib going to learn?  Sorry Bruce Allen didn’t tell you all along how the process was going (like your boy McKay would have), so you jumped the gun. “It’s a done deal.”  Never said by Bucs people, but you made your story, now you have to sleep with it.  Good day not to be Ira.  When exactly are writers EVER held accountable?  Players get cut, coaches get fired, writers just keep on doing what they do.  Wrong, wrong, wrong…at least you are consistant.

wow!  All some of you people ever want to do is talk trash.  Okay, so Ira got the story wrong!  Big woop!  Heck, I got the story wrong - I was 99% sure that Favre was coming to Tampa [as was almost everyone else].  It’s okay…I don’t need the guys’ job for making that report!

As far as Ira trying to spin this into something negative…well…who cares.  Clearly, NONE of the reports for TBO know a whole lot about football - beyond playing a little in high school.  For some reason, these guys think they know about players’ thoughts - they don’t.  Ira…stick to reporting the news and minimize reporting your opinions on other people.

Well this is embarrassing Ira; a sour grapes response, hours before Allen’s press conference no less, trashing the team because they did not do your bidding? Hunter S. Thompson is dead. But well before he took himself out he questioned the long term relevance and consequences of “Gonzo” journalism. It was never about what Ira Kaufman wanted it was about what was best for this franchise. Nick Pugliese never had such hubris.

I was just waiting to hear after watching the Rangers finnaly lost to the
Yankees in game 3. I really though that Farve was gonna be a Buc. Well Now, Tampa will have to regroup and take a real look at the Qb’s behind Garcia, Now. First of All we Need to pay Garcia whats he been asking since he was chosen to Replace you know Who in the ProBowl last Year(Brett Farve). I hope the coaching gives all the Qb’s. Like Rotate all the QB’s each Pre-season.
Like Pre-Season 2. Start Griese,Simms,McGown with Garcia plays 4th QTR. etc

For heaven sake Ira! The Bucs have lost “prestige” by not making the trade?? You media guys can be so confusing sometimes. I’m sure if the Bucs had made the trade that the Jets did. We would be hearing today about how the Bucs paid too much and didn’t really need him anyway. How Favre would not be of no greater benefit to this system than Garcia. The Packers had no intention of trading him within the division or conference if they could help it. I’m glad Gruden/Allen did not give away a 3rd or 2nd round pick for a guy that though talented, could not be counted on after this year…

Mitch R, NYC is a moron. He’s more then likely a Jets fan.  Go blog a NY sports blog carpet bagger. I guess Mitch is thinking Garcia is do a superbowl…let a lone afew playoff victories. Maybe TBO can hire Mitch to be Ira’s Bicth? they can call it “Clueless & Shoeless” Ha Mitch tell your mom I said “Hi” and I’ve got some pictures of her Daughter-in-law Naked!

No Nick…you’re the moron.  Mitch is one of the few people that actually knows what he’s talking about.  Unlike some people [you] who just come her to sound stupid [you], Mitch gets this game and has an intelligent opinion [not you].

So shut your pie hole before you make yourself sound even more ignorant that you already are.

What all of you morons fail to realize is that it was the Packers that didn’t want to trade to the Bucs; not the other way around.

Sorry everybody has to read the comments of losers like Shawn and Mitch. Who only know stats and don’t have season tickets to watch Garcia throw and talk like a little Girl.
The Fact is he has a weak arm and defenses can stack the box with him in at Qb. You’ll see Luke and Chris make defenses play on their toes. Sims is twice the man Garcia is… even without a spleen.  Garcia won’t last1

Nick, what a great comeback, I like to be brought back to 6th grade.  By the way, is that the last grade you completed in you ‘so called’ education?  I love the mother comments, so unique.  I probably know more about football, stats, players, offense, defense, you name it, than you will ever know.  I watch and learn, not watch and react, unlike the majority of fans out here.  Do yourself a favor and take some remedial english and math courses, perhaps get your GED and then come talk to me.

BRETT FAVRE DIDNT SPURN THE BUCCS, HE HAD NO CHOICE IN WHERE HE ENDED UP VIA TRADE. IT WAS ENTIRELY UP TO TED THOMPSON WHERE FAVRE WENT. IF YOU COULD GET AN HONEST ANSWER OUT OF FAVRE OFF THE RECORD I WOULD BET HE WOULD SAY HE WOULD MUCH RATHER HAVE ENDED UP IN TAMPA IF HE COULDN’T GO TO THE VIKES.

Look, everyone understands that Favre didn’t just come back for the hell of it.  Yeah, he wanted to play, but he would have preferred to play for something more than a one-and-done in the playoffs [which is what he’s going to get w/ the Jets - if even that].  Other than the vikings, Favre’s best choice would have been here in Tampa - we’re a team that’s close to being VERY good [plus the SB is here].

In the end, he had little say…that’s why he ended up in NY.  Yeah, he’ll say that that’s where he wanted to be, but everyone knows that’s not true.  It’s just a shame that he won’t have a shot at making one more run.

The Last Word on Brett Favre: Packers did not want to trade him to an NFC team. Bucs really had no chance to trade for him. Bucs would have beat the Jets offer if they had a chance. Now, lets get behand Jeff Garcia and get this season moving in the right direction. Offer Jeff a nice reward for meeting statistical and team benchmarks for this season. Give him the incentive to play his butt off for Tampa.

Nick, it’s clear to me that you did not even go to high school or college because you don’t know the difference between: your - meaning possessive, as in, “your car” and you’re - a contraction of you and are, as in, “you’re a moron”.  And I believe you mean Himes Ave, not Hines Ave, idiot.  I lived in Tampa for over 10 years and have been to my share of games.  But that’s besides the point, being a Bucs fan does not mean I have to live in Tampa or physically go to games.  I watch EVERY game and intelligently read up on games.  I don’t just claim to be a fan and casually watch.  Don’t be a moron.

Nick, Nick, Nick, when are you going to learn?  Don’t claim that I am a wussy (not wussie moron) if you’ve never met me.  I can claim you are an idiot because the comments you make are absolutely moronic and juvenile.  Do me a favor, take some adult education courses, master the English language and then start to post intelligent comments.  Until then, have fun hanging out in Ybor City and catching beads at Gasparilla.  But do me a favor, don’t spend all of your money at Mons, because you’re going to need it for continuing education.

As for knowing the game of football, I played and coached at the high school level.  I also walked on at UCLA in the summer of 1996 and 1997 - didn’t make the team, but I did graduate from there…which is clearly not something you can claim [UCLA or any other school].

So…tell us about your credentials, putz!

Nick, how do you figure that TB lost out on millions?  Ads? Hotels? Jobs?  all that because Favre was traded to the Jets rather than TB?  Last I checked we were a playoff team last year and return everyone (of importance) and have added to key positions.  We easily could have been an 11 win team last year (had we not tanked the last few weeks due to resting starters), so 11 wins this year, with this schedule is not out of the realm of possibility.  Winning = Ads, marketing $‘s and #####‘s in the seats, not trading for one specific player.

Packers leverage as much as they could out the Favre deal and got the JETS to cough up the pick. Packers never wanted to face Favre in the regular season. BUCS would have been his choice and the best fit but other factors controlled this deal. B Allen wasn’t about to redo the Dallas Herchel Walker trade again. GOOD! Packers never wanted the BUCS deal. Favre would have made an impact. How much is questionable. I was at the playoff game year and noticed that without Galloway there was no one to throw to…why?...because we have average receivers….average….if they don’t step up this year things will be the same. Favre would not have made a difference. GO BUCS!!!
