Jesuit baseball standout Lance McCullers has earned one of the 20 roster spots on this year’s USA 18-and-under National Team, Tigers coach Richie Warren confirmed.
The roster was announced Saturday night following the conclusion of the National Team Trials, which took place over the past week at the USA National Training Complex in Cary, N.C. McCullers, an infielder/right-handed pitcher, had earned his way into the trials via his performance at the Tournament of Stars, an invitation-only event that featured 144 of the nation’s top high school players earlier this summer.
McCullers will stay with the 18-and-under national squad over the next two weeks to prepare for the upcoming IBAF ‘AAA’ 18U Junior World Championship, which will be held July 23-Aug. 1 in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The USA squad is scheduled for 14 tune-up games before the 12-team junior world tournament begins, including exhibition contests against the national teams from Canada and Chinese Taipei.
“Lance is very excited to represent his school and community with this great opportunity, an opportunity which came with a lot of hard work along the way,” Warren said of McCullers, who is considered one of the nation’s top rising junior baseball players. “I am very proud of Lance and I know he will represent this community in a very positive manner.”
