Baseball America today announced Durham outfielder Desmond Jennings has been selected for the cover of the 2010 Minor League Preview scheduled for release next week. Staffers from Baseball America will be handing out free copies of the issue to fans attending the Spring Training Showdown between the Bulls and Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, April 3rd.

“It’s always exciting when one of your players is chosen for the cover of Baseball America,” Durham Bulls General Manager Mike Birling said, “Jennings was one of the most exciting players on our 2009 team and helped lead us to our first Triple-A National Championship.”

Jennings, ranked by Baseball America as the 6th best prospect in the country, joined Durham on August 1st and remained with the club through their run to the National Title. He was named Rays Minor League Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player of both Double-A Montgomery and the Southern League. Overall he hit .318 (158-for-497) in 132 games with 11 home runs, 52 stolen bases, 10 triples and a .401 on-base percentage.

The cover profile notes the success of the Tampa Bay Rays farm system which was named best in the country for 2010 in the annual Prospect Handbook. In it, Baseball America says,

“The Rays couldn’t develop a pitcher for the first decade of their existence, and now they have more than they know what to do with. In Desmond Jennings, they have come up with yet another of their signatures: a toolsy, athletic outfielder in the Carl Crawford/B.J. Upton line.”
