Jenkins makes Cowboys history

Dallas Cowboys and former USF CB Mike Jenkins said he was bragging to his teammates that he would the first Cowboy to get an interception at the new Cowboys Stadium.

The Cowboys had no interceptions in the home opener against the Giants, but Monday night Jenkins made good on his promise, picking off a Jake Delhomme pass midway through the second quarter of Dallas’ win against Carolina.

When Jenkins returned to the bench, he made the USF Bulls-horn gesture with his hand in part to honor the Bulls after Saturday’s upset at FSU.

“Oh, yeah, I had to,” Jenkins said. “We had a big week this week. We beat Florida State, so I had to throw it up.”

Flash forward: Florida State coach Bobby Bowden said he believes USF will only continue to get stronger in the future. And that was before the Bulls beat FSU.

“I can’t think of a team that has made faster progress (in 13 years),” Bowden said. “Coach (Jim) Leavitt has done a tremendous job. To me you have a wonderful spot for it to happen.

“If they will give him the facilities he needs, he will be able to have as strong a program there as you can find in the United States of America because of that area. You got Clearwater, you got Tampa, you got St. Pete, you got Orlando, what 50 miles away?

“You have all those people. That’s the advantage of coaching in the state of Florida.”
