Jefferson baseball player Ryan Montes has signed with Division II Florida Tech, Dragons coach Pop Cuesta announced Tuesday.
Cuesta said Montes, a recent graduate, was glad to be heading to a four-year school after much of the recruiting interest had come from junior college programs.
“It’s good for him,” Cuesta said. “He is very strong academically, so most of it is academics. I think he went to a camp there and they saw him pitch, and they must have liked what they saw.”
Montes played outfield and pitched for the Dragons. As a senior, he hit .260 with 10 RBIs and 14 runs scored, while going 2-4 with a 3.77 ERA on the mound. Cuesta said Montes will pitch in college.
Montes is the second member of the Dragons’ 2009 class to sign with a college program, joining shortstop Chad Taylor, who has signed with USF.
