Jefferson falls in NFL national 7-on-7 championship

Jefferson High, representing the Tampa Bay Bucs in the NFL national 7-on-7 tournament in Tampa this weekend, lost in the tournament championship to the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, 55-45.

With 45 seconds remaining in the tournament championship at Jefferson, the Bucs attempted to tie the game on the would-be final drive of the game. However, the Bucs, which trailed 52-45, turned the ball over on an interception with 20 seconds to go and according to tournament rules, the Dolphins were awarded three points for the interception. Up by 10, the Dolphins ran out the clock to win the championship.

Jefferson went 4-1 in pool play to earn the No. 2 seed in the NFC bracket. Their only loss was to the Dolphins, who also went 4-1 to earn the No. 2 seed in the AFC.

Over 250 athletes from around the country participated in the national tournament made up of 21 NFL teams. Jefferson received a runner-up plaque.
