Like Mike Jenkins, University of South Florida CB Trae Williams had to wait a little longer than he expected before being selected in the NFL Draft.
Williams was chosen in the fifth round Sunday by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was the 159th pick overall and the 26th cornerback selected.
“Some of the measurables aren’t where you’d like them,” Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio told jaquars.com. “We think this guy is a good football player. We’re not looking for front-line starters, but you have to have depth on your football team.
“I’m not going to place a ceiling on [Williams]. I want to see what you can do. If they can make a role for themselves, great.”
Jenkins slipped on Saturday to No. 25 in the first round before being drafted by the Dallas Cowboys. The addition of Jenkins to Dallas gives the Cowboys two former Bulls, along with CB Anthony Henry, a fact not lost with USF secondary coach Troy Douglas.
America’s Team is quickly becoming USF’s team.
“I’ve always been a big fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Douglas said. “But if there’s such a thing as a bandwagon fan, that’s me: I’m a Dallas fan now because they like the South Florida Bulls.”
USF coach Jim Leavitt said Saturday he wasn’t surprised Jenkins fell to No. 25. Especially after USF RB Andre Hall went undrafted in 2005 after leading the Big East in rushing.
“I’ve been through these things so nothing surprises me,” Leavitt said. “Everything happens for a reason.”

This article is suppose to be about Trae Williams getting drafted. There are two small paragraphs about him the rest is garbage. Who cares who the coaches root for. Of course they will pull for their ex-players. This article should have been written about how this young man is an outstanding person, player, and role model for all the young men aspiring to do what he did. Give me an example of an off the field issue with this guy...You won’t find one! He is a local product and there should be more coverage for that. Congrats Trae!

More on Trae would have been nice. It was a great pick for J’Ville; Trae could be their 3rd CB (just too short to be a full-time starter) for the next 8 years. He’s got great anticipation and knows how to play both man and zone, which many CBs can’t necessarily do. For him, he’ll have a chance to play for a winner and be an important contributor. Awesome pick for both sides.
