Forum: Talk Rays
|
Edwin Jackson, a 14-game winner during the regular season, will return to the Rays’ active roster for the ALCS against the Red Sox after sitting out as the team went with 10 pitchers during the first round.
Eric Hinske will be the position player left off to make room for an extra pitcher. Newcomer Fernando Perez will keep his starting spot because of his ability to be plugged in as a pinch-runner and play all three outfield positions well.
Updating: Hinske said he’ll remain with the team and travel to Boston, as Jonny Gomes and others not on the roster did during the ALDS.
“It’s not about me,” said Hinske. “It’s about the team winning ballgames.”
Jackson will give the Rays more help in long relief in the longer seven-game series, making him a more viable option than Troy Percival would have been for the extra pitcher’s spot. The Rays had only David Price in a long-relief role for the ALDS against Chicago.
“They know what, mentally, I’m capable of,” said Percival. “They just need to know I’m physically ready and I am physically ready now. They know I’m physically ready now. But the way they’ve got the bullpen set up, they needed somebody that can throw some more innings.”
The Rays have said they will not make an official announcement on their roster until after tomorrow morning’s deadline to submit it to MLB, but Joe Maddon did say today that he is “leaning toward 11 pitchers.”

Im so happy for Edwin. I watched almost all of his high school games and I have followed the ups and downs he has been thru. Can you imagine starting 31 games for a team, leading them in wins and being a part of something as special as what is going on with the Rays only to be told your not on the roster? Ive played sports all my life (never at this level) and it would crush me. Keep you head up Edwin and do whatever needs to be done to keep this magical season going. Rays in 08!

Great move by Maddon. It’s all about the team and Eric is right on it when he states it’s not about him. He’s a team player and that is what it’s about. The Rays have been successful because of the team coming together and the ownership and management sticking to their plan for the future of baseball in the Tampa Bay area. Go Rays !

How can Maddon go wrong - he has made the right calls all year.
The Rays have the right attiude to finish the Sox off. You would not believe the pressure I have been under from Sox fans in UK. I just hope we can finish the job off with BJ etc coming back to best form.
Go Rays

It’s good managing by Maddon. But…,. I am always nervous when it comes to Edwin. At least it is for long relief and not a starters job.

That roster change would make the most sense to me. Now that we know Crawford can perform well after his injury there’s no need to keep Hinske around and leave a guy who has contributed as much as Jackson off the roster. Especially with Perez’s speed and ability to play anywhere in the outfield.

Love Joe, but disagree. Put Edwin on, sure, but how do you leave off somebody who was third on the team in HRs, fourth in RBIs and stolen bases and fifth in slugging percentage?
Hinske plays both outfield and infield, has postseason experience and played for the very team that stands between the Rays and World Series.
He wears down pitchers, works 3-2 counts and fouls balls off. Even if he doesn’t get on base, that helps, especially with pitchers tired this time of year.
From homering in the first game in Baltimore to the last in Detroit, his contribution to the team was more consistent than Gabe Gross’s, though I see why Gross starts now.
Drop someone else. The Rays need Hinske.
