The Rays have optioned LHP J.P. Howell to Durham, meaning Edwin Jackson will open the season in the rotation.
“They had to pick somebody,” said a disappointed Howell, who had a fantastic spring.
RHPs Tim Corcoran and Scott Dohmann also were cut this morning - Corcoran optioned down and Dohmann outrighted.
Also, Rocco Baldelli and Dioner Navarro are scheduled to play in a minor-league game today at the complex. Josh Paul may join them.
Here are the lineups:

B.J. Upton CF
Ty Wigginton 3B
Greg Norton 1B
Jonny Gomes RF
Brendan Harris 2B
Raul Casanova C
Jorge Velandia SS
Scott Kazmir P
Phillies
Jimmy Rollins SS
Aaron Rowand CF
Jayson Werth RF
Wes Helms 1B

Corcoran started out really hot last year in his call up and faded at the end. I was hoping his work this spring would improve enough for him to be in the line-up as he did have some dominating performances last season. Shields has show some good stuff this spring too. My concern is the relief pitching. The Rays were dreadful closing out games! Finally, whats Maddon going to do with Upton, Cantu, Wigginton? I hope its not going to be a platoon of rotating players. Upton is really beginning to show those 5 tool skills!

Wow, both teams aren’t playing many regulars today. I guess this is the last chance for a lot of these fringe guys to try to make the team. Hopefully, we can play the last 2 games with our regular line up as kind of a dress rehearsal for Monday afternoon. I can’t believe Opening Day is almost here! Go Rays!

I agree with the decision on Jackson. However, I don’t think he have seen the last of JP Howell. That guy can pitch. Dohman was a bad signing from the beginning. I think Corcoran over acieved last year, but it shows you the new found depth we have now that a guy who was a big part of our staff last year. Who was having an OK spring. Can’t even make the roster. Durham’s pitching staff is going very strong. Niemann, Talbot, Sonnanstine, Howell, Hammel, Ryu (probably), Corcoran. There is a lot of high end pitching prospects that are jsut a call away now. Very exciting!

Durham’s starting rotation looks almost as good as the Vero Beach Rays may be. They might have McGee,Davis,Walker,Hellickson, and perhaps David Price later in the year.
