Armwood’s scheduled season-opening contest against Las Vegas Bishop Gorman was made official Tuesday when ESPN announced the matchup as one of 13 prep football games that it will televise as part of its annual High School Football Kickoff during the weekend of August 26-28.
Armwood’s game is slated for a 9 p.m. Eastern Time kickoff on ESPN. That game and the 12 others will be coming from 10 states: Alabama, California, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, South Carolina and Texas. These games feature seven teams ranked in the final 2010 ESPN RISE FAB 50 and more than 100 Division-I recruits.
“We’re really excited about because we think this game shows where we are as a program,” Hawks coach Sean Callahan said. “We’re happy to be playing a school like Bishop Gorman. They’re a first-class program and a true powerhouse. That’s not a reach to say that. And we’re really looking forward to taking 50 kids out there, 35 or so of whom have never been on an airplane before.”
Bishop Gorman, a Catholic prep school, is a two-time defending state champion and has won nine state titles overall. The Gaels are considered to have one of the nation’s top athletic programs and have a total of 78 state crowns in boys and girls team sports.
