TAMPA—The odds of the Glazers wriggling off the hook for Jon Gruden’s salary in 2010 are heading south.
In the 24 hours since Bruce Allen was named GM of the Redskins, rumors of Gruden joining him in the nation’s capital have diminished. It appears at this point that Gruden will remain with ESPN next year rather than return to the sidelines he stalked for 11 years as an NFL head coach in Oakland and Tampa.
Even before speculation intensified that Mike Shanahan will replace Jim Zorn as Washington’s coach next season, Gruden’s interest in the Redskins job appeared tepid. He truly enjoys his work as an NFL analyst, leaving him more time with his family.
While there is little doubt Gruden will return as a coach at some point, he is still healing from his stunning dismissal in Tampa 11 months ago. He has the look of a man content to draw lucrative paychecks from the Glazers and ESPN for awhile before stepping back into the arena.
