Is the Sun Dome that bad?

ESPN.com senior writer Pat Forde enjoyed covering the ACC men’s basketball tournament in Tampa in 2007, but as far as Tampa as a college hoops hotbed, he’s not going there.

Here is Forde’s take on Tampa as a college basketball market: “The Sun Dome has all the ambiance of an airplane hangar and the interest in Bulls basketball (until recently) has been nearly nonexistent. And the nice weather serves only as a constant reminder that there’s 6 inches of snow gathering on your driveway back home.”

What do you think? Does the Sun Dome really have the ambience of an airplane hangar?

The Sun Dome is a great college basketball arena.  It really gets rocking when it is full, preferably full with rowdy students instead of old fogey alumni who sit on their hands during the entire game.

Pat Forde is a horse’s backside, and that is being very polite about it.

The seats are falling apart, and the inside looks like it should have shag carpeting instead of a hardwood floor.  It’s almost as bad as the trop.  Woolard is talking about renovations at least.  If USF wants to compete with the big time recruits they will need to renovate.

It’s not about the structure (which isn’t that bad), it’s about the fans.
Stan is putting more fans in the stands and trust me, the place rocks when we play the way we’ve been.

The Sun Dome was just fine back in the early ‘90’s.  That was before roof renovations.  I think it has a hard top now?  The Corral was brand new back then.  Getting literally blown out of the building after the games due to the air pressure was always enjoyable!

Honestly, the Sundome is not that bad.  These people are being hypercritical.  High Tech Bull is (partly) right, the atmosphere is predominately about people getting involved.  Though I take issue with the “old-fogey alumni” comment.  We’re not all old, lol.

Let’s be honest guys; Forde is right, in a way. And so are all of you. Walking into the Sun Dome, there isn’t much “wow” factor. But there isn’t much “wow” factor in many other arenas or stadiums that are popular either. USF could play in a giant shack, and as long as there’s fans there to create the ambiance, then it doesn’t matter.

I am not a basketball fan, so I’m not in the Sun Dome a lot. A few years back, USF had a big game against Cincinnati. The place was packed and it was loud and it was CRAZY all night: fans going wild, a LOT of excitement because it was an important game. There was a buzz of anticipation before the game. The only time you noticed the age of the Sun Dome was when you walked up/down the stairs to get to your seat, or as you were leaving. Trust me, if the house is full and the fans are going at it, the age of the dome is NOT what you remember about your night. In Dec, I attended a graduation at Cincy’s - better scoreboard, that’s about it.

Ever been to a game in Memphis’s Pyramid?

the sun dome is essentially the same building as the o’connell center in gainesville

Rashad, very good point. I went to UF before all the current renovations to O-Dome, and Sun Dome reminds me a lot of that building in the early ‘90s.

Sun Dome will get some renovations, but a good team is best medicine in the world for the lack of ambience. Look at what happened at UF when they were winning titles; place was packed and atmosphere was rocking…same can happen at USF one day if program can take off and build some sustained success.

scott…..i think i was at the game the last time usf played in gainesville and it really looked like the sun dome with blue seats to me….and you are correct…winning cures a lot of ills…the sun dome is now better than it was 5 years ago…the hard roof holds the sound better and the scoreboards and press area are a lot better….now we just have to keep winning…have you heard anything about heath starting to look elsewhere and capitalizing on a good run here??

Rashad, I haven’t heard anything along those lines about Heath; I think he is focused on USF’s bid at making the tourney…if the Bulls finish strong and make March Madness, as the coaching world has proven time and time again, anything is possible. I’m sure he would draw interest from other schools like he did after leading Kent State to Elite Eight…at same time, he’s got something brewing at USF, so I’d be surprised if he left unless something came along too good to pass up.

prediction….the bulls go 5-2 the rest of the way and finish 20-10 and make it very difficult for the committee to leave them out
