Here’s the beauty of a blog, folks. The ability to relay some information that may not be able to get into a newspaper into a forum where you, the fans, can get some inside information. I saw that some picked up on this today on some message boards (I haven’t had a lot of time tonight to read what you guys are saying, but I’ve seen some) where I mentioned a couple of days ago that the falling through of the bank that was to finance Oren Koules was semi-old news and that it actually happened between 10-14 days ago. In between then and when the news actually became revealed, Koules was already working behind the scenes, knocking on lender’s doors, looking for somebody else to loan him the rest of the money to complete the transaction.
Koules actually hired at least one of the contact people at the French bank to help along in the process. He also has a friend in the financial field in California with contacts in the banking world. So, knowning that from some inside sources who couldn’t go on the record with it and that it couldn’t get into the newspaper in that form, I was able to present in this format and allow you guys - the well informed, passionate and (somewhat) loyal readers - to read between the lines there and understand that the bank falling through was going to have a minimal impact on the deal. Kudos to those who did.
Now, having said that, I didn’t expect to be hit with a bombshell when we touched down in Philadelphia today around 5:30 p.m. It didn’t help that we were delayed by over an hour because of the crummy weather here in the Northeast. It’s cold and very, very wet. It’s never good to check out the weather channel on line and see a 100 percent chance of rain in the city you are trying to get to.
But the deal is anything but done at this point. The financing is not secured, but it doesn’t really have to be at this point, it would just give everybody a greater comfort level. After all, there was a purchase agreement announced in August and we all know where that ended up. This time, however, it’s a little different. Koules has the down payment and he all but had the financing to complete the deal before the bank pulled out. Not his fault. So if one bank was willing to bankroll the deal, it shouldn’t be a major process to find another one.
And don’t think that the timing of this isn’t important, either. The trade deadline is less than two weeks away and there are plenty of things on the Lightning’s table and you would have to think Koules wants to be involved as a decision maker in that process.
What does the team do with Dan Boyle? Well, the chances of his re-signing a new deal just got a lot better with Koules having more of a say in potentially approving a new long-term contract.
What does the team do with the Big Three? Word is that those guys, along with Boyle, are a big reason why he wants to buy this team. So unless Jay Feaster or John Tortorella can convince - assuming they want to - of the long-term benefits of breaking up the Big Three, nobody is going anywhere.
There are other potential trades out there and Koules has been in contact with Feaster in conversational tones about who might be available and who might make sense for the team to acquire or move.
Lightning president Ron Campbell talked today about the type of owner Koules might be and compared him to Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban in terms of his passion for the game and for the team.
So let me hear it, what are your feelings on this? Happy to have some sort of a resolution to this process? Like the comparison to Mark Cuban?

Boyle is an asset and should be kept!We have done better just in the short time he has been back.Richie has not earned his paycheck consistently.Hope someone other than NJ gets him.Lukowich didn’t like it there-who would?!We need what’s best for OUR TEAM though. What about goaltending coaches? The front of our net has been very weak for so long.Maybe a different/better coach is needed for Homer and the others?Just a thought since we have lost SO many games/points due to that position.

I am torn with regards to the Prospal/Torts issue. It DID have positive results in the end and that is what the team needs desperately right now. What the team doesn’t need is the fairweather fans! How can a season ticketholder go to the game wearing a Lecavalier shirt stand up and cheer when the AVS scored??? AND then in later games stand up and give Richie the bird-when he scores yet!Get mad at them for not playing well, yes, but we do not need “fans” like that.I know that is the Tampa Bay way,but it is not welcomed by the TRUE fans.Save your money by staying home and save the rest of us the embarassment FOR you.

I like Oren Koules’ enthusiasm.. a former pro minor league hockey player himself is a big plus in my book.. if there’s a way he & management can keep all of the Fab 4 I’m for it.. but agree w/OP that #19 has to consistently earn that paycheck.. along w/the rest.. goaltending is inconsistent too: great one game and soft the next from both goalies.. maybe coaching changes across the boards are what’s needed.. and lack of depth from the farm team is a problem that will take a long term committment to fix.. some very major issues confronting this team’s front office.. and current management has gotten us to where we are right now.. it will be interesting to see how O.K. handles his/our team.

Right, Boltgirl, you may want to pay better attention. Trade Boyle. Say Goodbye. Blow him a Kiss. Get him out of town. Folks, just an FYI, the Bolts were #7 on the power play before Boyle came back. The Bolts were roughly 7 points back from 1st place before Boyle came back. The goaltending was an issue before Boyle came back. Are you getting my point? Nothing has changed since Boyle’s been back. Why he is the “answer” according to Torts, I have no clue. His defensive skills are not very good but his offense is great. Just in case you werent sure, yes he is a Defenseman not a forward. If he was a forward I’d be all for giving him the big bucks.

Great, another owner who doesn’t see fot to help re-shape this team. What’s the point of having those players(Big 4) if you never get to showcase them in the playoffs. Thats the road they are heading down folks. No way can you pay 4 players a combined 25 million dollars and be able to compete. One or two have got to go. Vinny4 is the most valuable player on this team and maybe the whole NHL, so no way he should be traded, that leave 2 out of 3 who should get moved.

Let’s hope Koules is like Cuban to an extent. Cuban took a laughing stock of a team in Dallas, and turned it into a perennial Championship contender. Not just a boarder line playoff team, a CHAMPIONSHIP contender. He put his money where his big mouth is. I hope Koules will do everything he can to build this team into a cup contender, and end this penny pinching non sense. Hopefully it will be without the Cubanesque antics though.

Richards has been anything but “big” the past two years. he is not in the same group as Marty and Vinnie. Maybe we should be talking about the big two and Boyle.

Keeping the top four and using up all of the cap room to do so isn’t going to help this team one bit. There still won’t be enough room to build a quality second line at all, and the stiffs we have won’t do it. The only way they can make Richards look good is to put him on Vinny’s line.
We need a goalie, as we have a back up and a minor leaguer there.
As far as the goalie coach, don’t forget that Reese always was a back up goalie in the NHL. When we had Tony Esposito (a Hall of Fame goalie), he wouldn’t work with the goalies.

Interesting story on Koules. Personally I just wish we could get a real owner. Maybe Koules can prove he is going to be a real one. By real owner, let’s see the guy from Japan, the Insurance guy for a cup of tea, Davidson, who was better than the others but never ever here and only wanted the property. Now we have a movie producer. What happens when the goalies falter? New movie: Saw 5(Demise of the Goalies)

Does Koules know anything really about hockey? That remains to be seen. This isn’t a Hollywood production. If it was everyone would be fans because the Lightning have “box office stars!” Hockey isn’t like that. Just because some of the players are fan favorites doesn’t make them the best players for this team. Boyle is going to look for $$ and if TB pays him what he wants, the rest of the team is going to suffer greatly when they lose productive cheaper players to once again finance their Fab 4. Richards is a good player, just not $7+mil. good! Trade Richards and Boyle. Get a couple of good, solid REAL defensemen and a solid goalie with size and smarts. There are great guys out there not being paid $7+ mil.

The best thing that can happen to this team is for Ok Hockey to be named the new owners. Local ownership for the first time EVER!!! This is not some basketball or football guy who wants to toy around with a hockey team because he couldn’t get anything else (I can count on one hand the number of times Bill has actually been inside the building). Owen is a guy who loves hockey and, more importantly, loves the Lightning. What could be better?
A week ago I would have said kiss Boyle and one of the big 3 g’bye! Today with the prospect of Owen owning this team, I have new hope.
I hope I get a chance to meet him in person when/if this finally happens.

I agree with you Mike. Brad has been a major bust. He was a non factor playing on the same line a Marty and Vinny4 (PP included). He is the easiest player in the NHL to knock off of the puck except for Karlsson and Hlavac and they are Bolts as well. The MVP line should never have been broken up. I am hoping but I am also realistic that Boyle is the odd man out because he is in a contract year. I will be very glad when Dollar Bill has sold the team to Koules. I can see why Absolute Hockey didn’t get the team when in fact Koules was to put up most of the money but had no say in the teams operation. That would have been a stupid move for him. I like what I hear about Koules and wish him the best of luck.

I few this as another step that will move this team forward to become a force in the NHL for many years. This is the type of owner that we need now that Mr. Davidson wants to move on. I thnk Mr. Davidson for everthing he has done for this team nad the Tampa area. But in the very near future we will see what an owner who loves this game can bring to a team that is stocked with some of the top talent in the NHL.

Hopefully the Lightning trade Kuba and resign Boyle - dump Lukowich and let some of the young guys play - they shouldn’t trade Richards unless they get an offer they can’t refuse - and trading Prospal has to happen because it doesn’t appear that he’ll want to be playing for Torts again next year - I’d say trade Prospal and our 1st round pick to Anaheim for Edmonton’s first round pick. To answer Erik’s question it is great that we are bringing in a new owner that might actually show an interest in the team - how many games did Davidson actually go to? - besides someone needs to hold Feaster responsible for some of this personal decisions especially in terms of scouting.

lets hope hes not like cuban and doesnt produce anti american movies full of liberal propaganda.lets hope he maxs out the salary cap and makes some major changes in the future…
Suggest removalPor (Mike Joyce) on February 15, 2008 (Suggest removal)
People, if you add up the money that is already tied up between Vinny, Marty, Brad and Marc Denis (Denis is still a multimillion cap hit next year), then add $7 mil that Boyle will be looking for, there will hardly be enough, you will have quite close to $20 mil. That leaves the balance of the cap limit to divide over 15 players on the roster, or a bit over a million per player. Our current roster would be over the limit, so we would have to trade and bring in a lot of rookies to fill the team.
Suggest removalPor (Greg M) on February 15, 2008 (Suggest removal)
Mike, if you trade Kuba and his 3 million dollar salary then that’ll be enough to give Boyle his 5-6 million (no way will he get 7 million). Plus, the cap next year will probably be closer to 50 million we just need the new owner to spend some money. Plus at least on defense we have some depth in the farm system.
Suggest removalPor (S. Lewy) on February 15, 2008 (Suggest removal)
After reading the Tribune this morning and seeing Boyle could be looking for $6-7mil, the Lightning should realize they don’t have the money for that. Both Boyle and Richards are similar players. Richards is a defensive-offensive player and Boyle is an offensive-defensive player. We don’t need to overpay both. Think smart—keep Prospal-get some more like him - cheap and productive. What we need is some really SMART defensemen and a REALLY GOOD goalie. We have scoring power, just not defensive power.
