Injury Bug Bites Brandon Baseball Hard

After making a run to the Class 5A state tournament last season, Brandon’s baseball team entered 2009 with the hopes of making a run at a state title with the bulk of that team returning.

Now, the Eagles are facing a potential crippling blow to meet those expectations, as two of their best players – junior outfielder James Ramsay and junior first baseman Roderick Shoulders – are out with injuries that could potentially end their seasons.

http://snap.tbo.com/images/100038/photos/2009/02/25/gallery/2232728.jpg” width=“200” alt=”” style=“float:left; margin-right:10px;”>Brandon coach Matt Stallbaumer said Thursday morning that Ramsay (pictured) has a knee injury that is feared to be a torn ACL, while Shoulders has what is feared to be a torn labrum in his left shoulder. Stallbaumer said both players, who are out indefinitely as of now, were scheduled to undergo MRI exams this week to determine the extent of the damage – with the results of those exams being available possibly as early as Friday – but the coach added he’s preparing to deal with the worst-case scenario.

“I’m starting to prepare what it’s going to be like for the season without Roderick and James,” Stallbaumer said. “If something comes back and their situations are a little bit better than we thought, then we can make some changes. Like today, I’ve got to figure out what I’m going to go with without them in the lineup.”

Both Ramsay and Shoulders had breakout sophomore seasons for the Eagles. Ramsay, the reigning Saladino Tournament MVP, hit .467 with nine doubles, three home runs, 30 RBI and 35 runs scored in 2008 while also playing stellar defense in center field. He was a Tribune All-Hillsborough County first team selection and an FSWA Class 5A All-State first team pick last season. Shoulders was equally impressive for the Eagles last season, earning Tribune All-Hillsborough County second team honors after hitting .414 with eight doubles, six home runs and 39 RBI.

Stallbaumer said Ramsay injured his knee in practice about two weeks ago while diving for a ball. The Eagles center fielder has continued to play through the injury, but the discomfort and swelling in the knee never subsided, prompting Stallbaumer to recommend Ramsay see a physician. If the MRI reveals the worst, Ramsay, who committed to USF before the season began, would undergo season-ending knee surgery.

Shoulders, meanwhile, was injured while diving for a ball during Tuesday night’s victory over Freedom. Stallbaumer said even if the MRI reveals the worst, it’s possible Shoulders could hold off on surgery until the summer and use rehab to strengthen the shoulder. Still, the coach said Shoulders still is likely to miss several weeks.

Needless to say, the loss of two of their best players - for any amount of time - puts the Eagles in a very difficult situation.

“If it could have been one of them, you try and put it in your head that you may be able to do something [to offset the loss]. If it’s both of them, that changes the whole offensive mindset, that changes a ton of what we’re capable of doing, that’s for sure,” Stallbaumer said. “We’re going to have to keep playing, and we’re going to have to pitch and do all those things that will help keep it close, and we’re going to have to find some way to scratch some runs across the board.”

I feel bad for ramsey and for shoulders they are both friends of our family and former teammates of our son who played for brandon and coach staulbaumer but i do not feel bad for him since every year more and more players get the shaft from him and get hurt in the same fashion under his supervision makes you wonder.

Sad to see this sort of thing happen. How come the coach just did not have Ramsay checked when it happened but let him continue to play possibly making it worse? Hope they both recover soon for their sake. Both are very skilled players. Brandon will probably be OK winning their district since their district does not have any real competition and is very average but the Saladino and States run from last season will be next to impossible without the 2 of them.

i agree with the new comment made but you would have to understand the way this coach thinks and i do he is more worried about himself than the players on his team and their futures my son played for him and also suffered an injury and also was to be scouted by the ny yankees the coach was made aware of this and told us he would get him playing time in that game so he could be seen and went out of his way not to do it how do you do that to your player

Some people would be better off keeping there mouth shut.I guess Tiger Woods coach should be fired since he played with a torn acl. Both injuries were freak accident, and had nothing to do with conditioning.Rock got injuried diving for a ball and Ramsey got hurt when his spikes got caught up in the grass going for a ball. Both players are competitors and maybe they wanted to play and help there team get back to state.

well i am not going to keep my mouth shut i guess since your a friend of his you dont want to see the truth and tiger woods has a professional coach who has his best interest at heart and does not hinder his career by holding him back or not giving him the chance to shine where needed how about coach staulbaumer cant say the same for him i can count too many instances where he stood in the way of his players futures and did nothing for them why?

and one further thing for the person who thinks i should keep my mouth shut why is brandon the only program every year that has its key players going down with the same injuries no other programs have that problem only brandon so answer that one i guess it has something to do with how they are being trained but has to be something otherwise i am sure other schools would have the same problem dont you think

While I sure all parents feel their kids deserve to play more bat higher in the lineup or whatever the case may be,Mr.Perzov I’ve known you a long time and to blame the coaches or trainers at BHS is crazy is Joe Maddon to blame for BJ and others injuries last year No way,I was at the game Rock was laying out for a ball, just a freak thing his shoulder popped out and with this the Labrum usually tears just rock playing hard like he always does,Ramsay sliding for a ball at practice, once again a kid who knows only one way to play the sport all-out in games and practice,That is why this program is where its at,this group plays hard all day everyday..Practice or games they put it on the line everyday and injuries are part of the game…

you see i played for baumer for 2 years on the varsity team and what i have to say has nothing to do about the injuries. How come he has his favorites i mean my senior year he only helped out the few seniors that were there to get them into college he never helped all of the seniors and why is that it could possiblity be that he only has his favorites over there at brandon. Also when i played we had this thing called a GPA and you must have at least a 2.0 to be eligible and i wasnt and i didnt get to play my freshman or sopohmore year but in my senior year we had 4 to 5 freshman on the team that had under a 2.0 how does that make them eligible to play but not me when i was a freshman.

well mr smith since you say you know me so well then also tell the public how all other brandon players are given all the respect needed and get their shot at building their futures and that only seems to apply to specific club members my son was to be scouted by the ny yankees and the coach knew about it and told us he would get him in and did not also we wont even start on how many violations of school policy have been around only for his favorites

also if my son had been treated like all the other players i would not be this angry but he was not and you know it and about your other comment yes if joe madden had as many players each year go down with the same injury the orginization would investigate and he would be fired how many brandon players have to be hurt with the same type injury before someone does something about it other coaches with other schools were fired for less

well mark i am sorry if i have offended you because i think of you as a friend but i have been quiet for too long and whats wrong is wrong please answer me one question my son was not allowed to be on varsity because his gpa was 1.98 but two players played during his senior year with gpas much lower and one was a freshman starting pitcher that coach staulbaumer was in love with for his future team so if your a pet you are above the rules?

Mr perzov There have not been any of the same injuries for 5 years We have been at Brandon. The acl that was torn by the other player was done during basketball season..and no torn labrum’s in the past 5 years..so these injuries your speaking of are not related and are freak accidents that’s all….any other issues you have are the same one every parent in every sport at every age level deals with everyday…stop trying to blame coaches who have a different outlook on your sons ability than you or I have. We all don’t always agree with a coaches decision but life isn’t fair all the time you deal with it and move on with your life stop trying to ruin what this team has accomplished so far…

Edward the faster you learn that in every family, job, classroom or sport your in not everybody is treated equal that’s what happens in the real world everyday…I’m sure you have seen that in you life by now..make the best out of what you have and be thankful for given the chance to play at all.Think of how many kids never get the chance to play high school baseball in their lives…It just wasn’t meant to be..trust me we all realize one day the dream is over..then real life begins your a great kid make the best of your life with whatever you do..put the same effort in whatever job you have and you will succeed!!

I’ve read all of these comments posted and I must agree with Mr. Smith. I go to Brandon High School and am good friends with both James and Rock. I was at the Freedom game and saw his pop his shoulder out of socket. Rock, like any great player would do, to help his team stay in the game, tryed to shake off this injury. No foul play by the coach can be brought up here, just a freak injury at this crucial point in this season. And James himself wanted to play through this, how many times will a player have a jammed knee, or bruise a kneecap playing, more than a torn ACL i believe. The Brandon coaching staff does an amazing job with these boys and if someones son doesn’t get playing time, you can’t judge a coach 5 years later.

I have no idea what kind of conditioning they’ve been through even though I’ve been through 11 weeks of Basic Training for the army, I sure hope your son wasn’t pushed too hard for 2 hours after school on weekdays, he must have been sooooo stressed. And I actually have no idea how to spell baseball, but i’m sure your son does, not playing for the Yankees, i’m sure has given him time to catch up on schooling. smile

to chris cole and everyone i guess i came off bitter i dont actually blame anyone for an injury it is an accident but as for rules they exist for a reason and when they are stretched for one player and not another or actually the one who follows the rules then gets beaten up with them is wrong the same opportunity should be available to all players not just select click members and until that is done brandon will always have this issue to deal with.

Por (adam perzov) on March 03, 2009 (Suggest removal)

oh and chris and mark please tell me how many of brandons better players that were very good players left brandon and went to other schools and had great high school baseball careers and left because the way they were treated on this team now who is at fault for that? And it is not only the coaches fault but it is his system and the way he runs his team if he did what was right i guess he would not have that problem would he.

And one last thing for everybody for the record my wife and i love coach staulbaumer and were big supporters of him and his program and we still love the team and were heartbroken when we read about what had happened so please understand all i am saying is my wife and i and my son just feel that we stood by the coach and the program but feel let down that the coach and the program did not stand by us and our son no one put him on the team he earned it.

If your son is good he will play under Stallbaumer. If not, he wont. And don’t kid yourself into thinking your son didn’t get recruited by the yankees b/c your son didn’t get playing time in ONE game. If he was that good it wouldn’t have mattered.  This is obviously a case of a bitter parent whose son wasn’t good enough for the lineup. Get over it. And I’m not a friend of Matt’s - I’m family. You can say that makes my opinion biased but it’s simply fact. It’s bout time you accepted it yourself. And let’s not take hits on anyones intellegence for anyone who’s out of their teens and doesn’t have their drivers license. (u know who you are)

Por (adam perzov) on March 05, 2009 (Suggest removal)

to jbg who is not enough to say who you are but you show my point you are ignorant so i guess you fit in with the clan my son was good enough because a scout from an agency saw him and sent this scout to see him but that does not matter what matters is the coach not doing what was right and that is to offer the same opportunity to all his players but being you are so educated i guess you can spell discrimination at least i hope so

Por (adam perzov) on March 05, 2009 (Suggest removal)

and one further thing do not begin to tell me how good my son is or not i already said if you read my other comments that i think coach staulbaumer is a good coach but i think he needs to be there for all his players not his chosen few who he hand picks all the players deserve the same chance to have the future they want to pursue and if you are going to lash out against my son again have the guts to say who you are coward.

Por (adam perzov) on March 05, 2009 (Suggest removal)

oh and as far as my son not being seen in one game has nothing to do with it this was more than one game he was not given the opportunity he needed.so if the scouts dont get the chance to see you how will they know who you are and what you can do and all i ever asked of coach was to give my son the chance to be seen not too much to ask from two parents that gave alot of support to him,the team and his program and again whats right is right and he was"WRONG”.
