Reilly Campbell, a Florida State graduate and former graduate assistant at UNC-Charlotte, has been named head basketball coach at Bishop McLaughlin., athletic director Tom LoSauro announced Wednesday in an email.
Campbell was most recently an assistant coach at Sarasota Out-of-Door and also was an assistant at Oldsmar Christian.
Campbell replaces Mike Slonaker, who left to become the Plant basketball coach when veteran coach Michael Phillips was not re-nominated for the position after the season following an internal investigation into alleged illegal recruiting.
The Hurricanes went 10-12 last season, losing to Tampa Prep in the Class 2A-10 district semifinals.
In additional news about Bishop McLaughlin sports, the Hurricanes volleyball team’s Sept. 7 game against district 3A-8 rival Tampa Prep has been rescheduled to Sept. 27 due to the AC in Bishop’s gym breaking down. The game is slated for 7 p.m. and will still be at Bishop McLaughlin.
The Hurricanes, which are 1-0 after easily beating Citrus Park Christian School in three games, are led by senior OH Jessica Johnson, who led the county with 328 kills and 201 aces as a junior.
