In the coming days, Hudson will have a new athletic director.

Internally, Hudson will select from former girls basketball coach Flo Massaro, baseball coach Keith Newton and boys basketball coach Jason Vetter. The external candidates include Jeff Koos, AD at Paul R. Smith Middle; Pio Rizzo, former Mitchell boys soccer coach and current AD at Johnson Middle School in Bradenton; Anclote baseball coach Albert Santiago; and Mitchell football assistant and former boys basketball coach Andy Schmitz.

“There was a committee formed at the school and we interviewed everyone last Thursday, Friday and (Monday) was our last day and we forwarded two names to (principal Dr. David) LaRoche for further consideration,” assistant principal Scott Davey said.

The school’s AD position opened when Linda McQuade, who held the post since 1997, was selected to become the new AD at Fivay High School, which will open in August. McQuade became the first female athletic director in Pasco County when she was hired 14 years ago at Hudson.

Once an athletic director is named, the candidate will then jump headlong into finding the school’s new football coach. Mark Nash was named football coach at Nature Coast just over two weeks ago following six season at Hudson. Nash’s 34-31 record and three playoff appearances, including a regional semifinals appearance in 2005, made him the winningest coach in Hudson history. The Cobras were 17-43 prior to Nash’s tenure.
