Talks between the Rays and reliever J.P. Howell went done to the final minute before the two sides avoided arbitration and agreed on a one-year, $1.8 million deal for 2010.
The Rays had until 1 p.m. Tuesday to sign Howell or take the matter to an arbitration hearing next month.
The Rays also avoided arbitration with shortstop Jason Bartlett, who agreed to a one-year contract earlier in the day.
It appears as of now - 2:30 p.m. - that center fielder B.J. Upton and pitcher Matt Garza will head to arbitration.
