Academy of the Holy Names athletic director Pete Young released a statement Tuesday announcing the school’s new girls basketball coach:
The Academy of the Holy Names today introduced Chris Kumka as its new head basketball coach. Kumka, 32, has been high school golf head coach and a boys middle school basketball coach at AHN the past two years, in addition to being an AHN assistant high school softball coach. He met with the basketball team today at 4 p.m.
Kumka replaces Casey Higgins, who was the basketball head coach for five years. She resigned following the 2007-08 season, after guiding AHN to an 18-10 record, to spend more time with her family and two young children.
A native of Maine, Kumka played college basketball at the University of New England, graduating in 1997 with a degree in education. He was an assistant basketball coach for six seasons in Maine, three with the boys team at Bridgton Academy and one with the boys team at Sanford High, and two with the men’s team at the University of Southern Maine. He also coached a Maine-based girls AAU basketball team for three summers.
Kumka moved to Tampa in 2004 and has been at teacher at Coleman Middle School for four years. He guided the AHN golf team to a runner-up finish in the district tournament in 2007, and helped the softball team to consecutive district runner-up finished in 2007 and 2008.
