New USF football coach Skip Holtz began the task of assembling his staff on Sunday, releasing five assistant coaches from Jim Leavitt’s staff, including offensive coordinator Mike Canales and defensive coordinator Joe Tresey.
Offensive line coach Mike Simmonds, linebackers coach David Blackwell and special-team coach John Hendrick were also informed during individual meetings with Holtz on Sunday that they were not being retained.
Holtz is retaining offensive line coach Larry Scott and defensive line coach Kevin Patrick, both key recruiters for the Bulls, and plans to keep receivers coach Phil McGeoghan and running backs coach Carl Franks, who was named interim coach when Leavitt was fired Jan. 8, on the staff for now.
Franks and McGeoghan will be re-evaluated once National Signing Day passes and Holtz has more time to add other members to his staff.
East Carolina defensive line/special-team coach Vernon Hargreaves is expected to join Holtz’s staff, and East Carolina co-offensive coordinator Todd Fitch is considered a leading candidate to replace Canales.
Holtz returned to his North Carolina home Sunday afternoon with his family to wrap up some personal matters there. He is expected back in Tampa on Tuesday.

Scott….I had posted this in another blog entry but it makes much more sense here. You already answered part of my original post but here is an unanswered question for you:
Is there any possibility that Willie Martinez, the old UGA DC, gets a call from from Holtz?
If we are going to take the “next step” then getting top-level talent from top BCS conference may be needed.

Hector, I wouldn’t say that’s out of the question. Martinez obviously fell out of favor in Athens this season, but he’s a proven coach and with Holtz’s expertise on the offensive side, he’s looking for a top-notch defensive coordinator.
Stay tuned.

Although it’s typical for a new head coach to bring in a lot of new assistant coaches or the assistants from his former team, is there an actual evaluation done on the existing coaches’ performance? I hate to see Tresey go; he just got here and he did good things in Cincy. I always liked Canales; he seemed to do well with Blackwell and Grothe. But in the end, I guess the win/loss record speaks for itself…

Scott, when Kiffin left Tennessee, there was talk that he might be able to retain USC’s recruits and get some of the Tennessee recruits to go to USC; is that possible here? Would Holtz be able to keep ours and grab a few of his old school’s? Or would we even want them? Plus, any idea of what type of offensive scheme and defensive scheme he plans to run?

Dan, all Holtz has said so far is that he is going to honor whatever outstanding offers USF had made to recruits. As for going after some of his East Carolina recruits, if there’s a player who committed more to Holtz than ECU, I’d say that’s a chance. But Holtz doesn’t seem like a Kiffin in terms of personality. What Ed Orgeron did at Tenn. by calling those recruits is seen as pretty low in coaching circles.

As for his offensive style, he likes to mix it up in formation can play-calling. He’s used pro-style formations more than spread, but I’m sure he’ll adjust to his talent here until he can get his type of players in. He’s an offensive coach, so getting a high-caliber defensive coordinator is at the top of his to-do list in the early going.

Do you see Lou Holtz taking an active roll with USF, at least from behind the scenes?

Sam, I don’t see Lou Holtz doing anything in terms of coaching, but he will be a great ambassador for the program from his role on ESPN and also perhaps as a speaker at booster functions. I see that being a huge plus for USF in this whole deal.

that WOULD be a huge plus, no doubt
