Arguably the biggest prep football game of the 2010 season involving a Hillsborough County team will be played tonight, when Plant High takes on Abilene (Texas) High in a nationally-televised game in Texas. The matchup certainly has some meaning to USF football coach Skip Holtz, whose son, Trey, is a member of the Plant squad.
While another parent of a former Plant High player in the coaching business was known to catch a quick flight to see his son play (ex-Colts coach Tony Dungy did so), Holtz said after Wednesday’s practice he wouldn’t be making the trip to catch the game.
“I’ll be able to see it on TV,” Holtz said. “That’s a good thing with going to Plant.”
Holtz said it’s been routinely tough to watch his son play since he entered the varsity level because his Friday night’s - when varsity games are typically held - are mostly spent with his team.
“When he was playing j.v. it was a lot easier because they played on Thursday night’s and we would finish with practice and it was a lighter day on Thursday and I could go to almost all of the home games. On Friday’s it’s hard because on Friday night’s your with the team and kind of getting them ready from a mental standpoint,” he said.
That’s not to say Holtz won’t be doing any travel. The coach spoke about how bye weeks typically are big in the recruiting effort, and that his staff had plenty of player evaluations to make - both for the Class of 2011 and Class of 2012.
