USF coach Skip Holtz didn’t just sign LaGrange (Ga.) quarterback Jamius Gunsby to come in and hold a clip board his first season.
With B.J. Daniels the starter and back-up Evan Landi inexperienced and considering a move to receiver, Holtz said Gunsby will be competing to back up Daniels when he arrives for fall camp.
“We’re hoping from a mental standpoint that he can come in and pick it up,’’ Holtz said a few minutes ago on a live stream from USF’s football offices. “He is really an incredible athlete considering his size. He is going to have to turn and development mentally and see how fast he can pick it up.’‘
Holtz loves Gunsby’s size and athleticism. He said if Gunsby can come in and grasp the offense and other challenges of playing quarterback on the college level, he’ll have an opportunity to contribute immediately.
Overall, the best part of signing day so far for Holtz:
“There have been no surprises. We’re just waiting on more letters to arrive.’’

Scott, get on the horn and start calling coaches about some of the other recruits. St. Pete Times is kicking your rear over there in the signing day coverage. And I need my fix over here!
Glad to hear about Gunsby, he seems to be a great athlete, but I don’t know if he’s going to be able to read a college D. well enough. Very few reads in high school when compared to collegiate football. Fingers crossed for the young allstar.
