Ashley Wright, a three-time member of the Tampa Tribune’s all-county track and field team during her prep career at Hillsborough High, has transfered to the University of South Carolina from Allen University, Terriers coach Steve West announced Wednesday.
According to West, Wright has receiver her release from Allen, private, a historically black university located in Columbia, S.C., where she has been since her graduation from Hillsborough in 2009.
West said Wright will walk-on at South Carolina, which is known for having one of the nation’s top women’s track programs under longtime coach Curtis Frye. The Gamecocks’ throws coach, Mike Sergent, is also accomplished. Sergent has coached 20 All-Americans, 21 NCAA qualifiers, 14 SEC champions and five NCAA champions in 13 seasons at South Carolina.
