Hillsborough High defensive end Reggie Johnson, a standout in the classroom and the football field, has received an offer to play for Harvard University, Terriers coach Earl Garcia announced Friday.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Johnson is entering his third season as a starter for Hillsborough. Last year, however, Johnson was hampered by injuries to his shoulders, both of which required surgery, as well as a thumb injury that sidelined him. As a result, he missed several games early in the season but “came on strong” near the end of the 2009 campaign, Garcia said.
“We’re expecting big things from him this year,” Garcia said of Johnson. “He’s going to be one of the keys for us on defense.”
Like other Ivy League universities, Harvard does not offer athletic scholarships. Instead, Johnson’s offer is simply to play for but includes academic aid.
