Hillsborough junior offensive lineman Andre Gunn, a first-team member of the Tampa Tribune’s All-Hillsborough County football team and a standout on the Terriers’ baseball team, has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee and is expected to be out of action for six months, Gunn’s father, Carlton Gunn, said Friday.

The 6-foot, 290-pound Gunn torn the ACL playing basketball at a local recreation center and was examined by Terriers team orthopedic surgeon, Dr. David Leffers. Carlton Gunn said Leffers wants the swelling in the knee reduced before surgery is performed, likely late next week.
“There’s nothing good about the injury but at least it came in January, not the fall,” said Carlton Gunn, who played football for Tennessee after earning Parade All-American honors at Robinson High in 1977. “And this time will give him a chance to work on his upper-body strength by getting in that weight room during the recovery period.”
Andre, who played his freshman and sophomore seasons at Middleton, has never missed a game in three seasons as a starting offensive lineman. He also saw action on the defensive line. On Hillsborough’s baseball team, Gunn was the clean-up hitter and is known for his power hitting. He is expected to be one of the Terriers’ top recruits next season on the offensive line.
