Hillsborough High’s Anthony Brown is heading to Purdue.

Brown picked the Boilermakers over several other Division I offers, including Indiana, Iowa State, Washington State, Western Michigan and Ohio. Brown gave his verbal commitment to Purdue coaches on Friday while on an unofficial visit to the campus in Lafayette, Indiana.

“I just wanted to make this decision now so that I can concentrate on the season and my school work and not recruiting,” Brown said. “And when I came up here, I really fell in love with the campus and the coaches are great. It felt like the right thing.”

Brown, a defensive back/running back for the Terriers, was one of the team’s leading tacklers last season and saw limited time on offense. His performances last season in track and field produced multiple Division I offers, solely based on his speed. His personal bests are 10.58 seconds for the 100-meter dash and 21.60 for the 200-meter dash. Brown finished third at the Class 3A state championships in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Purdue recruited as a defensive back and they’ve encouraged him to run track for the Boilermakers.

That’s one of the main reasons he’s expected to play a major role on offense this season.
