Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden said WR Ike Hilliard checked out the hospital last night and his injury does not appear severe, while RB Warrick Dunn has a pinched nerve in his upper back.
Hilliard apparently sustained a concussion after a helmet-to-helmet collision against Seattle on Sunday and was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
Gruden said Hilliard is probably questionable for Sunday’s game against Dallas, which will leave Tampa Bay in a major hole at receiver.
The Bucs are all ready without WR Joey Galloway (foot), while WR Maurice Stovall (hamstring) is still recovering from his injury. Tampa Bay now must rely on WR Antonio Bryant, WR Michael Clayton and WR Brian Clark.
When asked if there was a possibility Galloway would not play again this season, Gruden said he needed to see Galloway go through a full week of practice, which has not happened.
“I’ve said a lot about the White Tiger and I’ll be looking at the cage today to see if he’s out,” Gruden said.
Gruden also needs more time to find out about Dunn’s injury, but if he is unable to play this week, Tampa Bay will probably utilize RB Michael Bennett.
Gruden also addressed Dexter Jackson’s struggles as a punt and kickoff returner.
He said there was a possibility Jackson could be removed from his duties and another player could take his position.
“We’ll talk about that a little bit today,” Gruden said. “He does have talent and we are asking a lot of the young guy. We’ll look at that. Look at what candidates we do have and what competition we can create.”
Gruden also expressed his excitement about the Rays’ success as he looks forward to their World Series games this week.
“It was a great night for Tampa,” Gruden said. “On behalf of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, we’re excited for them, and for the city of Tampa and St. Petersburg, this is going to be a fun week for us.”

its starting to look like picking dexter “fetal position” jackson with the 2nd round pick was one of the worst draft picks in Bucs history. to think of all the other players we passed on for this guy. who wanted him? i read in pfw that gruden wasn’t the one who wanted him.

He looked great several games ago and now he’s back to being scared or inept. I’m glad someone is not blaming this one on Gruden. I was a bit shocked by this pick. I guess they thought they were getting Hester. I hope he gets better. Put Clayton on kick-offs and use Jackson, Hilliard, and/or Dunn on punts. If we have the lead, please use someone other than Jackson. I never want to see the guy drop a punt and cause us to lose. What about Talib? He ran back punts in college. We need our special teams back. Without Stovall and Storer, that’s our biggest weakness.

If Gruden didn’t want him then who did? Bucs passed on Linas Sweed, James Hardy just to name a couple of receivers who could have contributed far more than this Jackson fella. Next years draft Bucs need a QB, WR’s, DL, BFLB, that’s a big fast linebacker.

I’ve gotta know Bo….who are all of the players that we passed on? I’m no happier with his play so far, but you seem to have a crystal ball approach and I’m anxious to hear who was the “no-brainer” that we missed on? we’ve has solid drafts over the past few years and DJ is nothing more thta a reminder that some times its not automatic.

Put Michael Bennett back there to field kickoffs and punts. Brian Mitchell used to be a RB and was used extensively and successfully on Special Teams for the Eagles. Bennett’s got a bigger frame and is just as fast.

I haven’t seen one of our esteemed NFL beat writers mention this, but a helmet to helmet hit in the NFL is a persnal foul and in that case, no fumble could have occured on that play. Doesn’t anyone, including the refs know the rules?

Mark, are you brain dead? Ref813, who else but Gruden and Allen make the decisions on draft day? First, we blow a 4th rd pick on Dre ‘Can’t Get Off my Butt’ Moore and also a 2d Rdr on Dexter Jackson. Granted, Monte can sure pick Def talent, but the off genius? OOPS, Again. Who did we miss on? Ever-body picked after them you MO-RON!

I would like to know if Gruden and Allen are going to protest the helmet to helmet hit on Ike to the NFL?????

CVal, you really are a miserable slug. Look people, the Bucs won. They loked good. They look better than most teams, period. Period. Jackson will be dealt with. So what? All the armchair coaches with Crystal Balls up their @$$es kill me. I wish I could predict the future as well as some of you. Suck it! Go Bucs!

cval, is it possible that they could have taken input from special teams coaches or that Allen or the Glazers really wanted Jackson? You people amaze me with your blindness. Who gave us an O-line? Gruden. Who gave us Cadillac and Clayton? Gruden. I know you could make a complaint about either, but who would have known that after their 1st years? I don’t care who picked Jackson. Few teams have drafted as well as we have under Gruden. 2 mistakes this year and everyone knows better all of a sudden. We didn’t need another big possession WR, so we passed on Sweed and Hardy.

Next year, we will get a WR, and possibly a RB or QB, based on the need at that point. We will also continue to build our D of the future. When you look at the number of players who have started their 1st years, it’s pretty amazing. We also have the best O-line we’ve had in as long as I can remember. I was shocked when they took Zuttah, too. Guess what? He’s really good and can play just about anywhere. The last thing I’m going to sit here and criticize is their drafting. I’ll leave that to some of you coaches and GMs. There sure are a lot of you in here. I’m just a fan.

Nice post Ref813. That pretty much sums it up.

Very amused by our Nashville and Memphis Bucs fans going at it. Lets see what happens before we right Dexter off, he may become a kid who puts on 15 pounds and becomes a burner at WR. Right now, I’m tired of yelling at him while he is tripping or balled up.
Suggest removalRemember that kid we drafted in the second round and the coaches thought was a bust until the last game of his rookie year (Rhonde Barber). I don’t like what I have seen but I’m going to give a pick a year to two to work itself out.
