High School Basketball All-Star Games

Although the season officially ended this past weekend, there is more basketball to be played in Hillsborough County this week.

The Tampa Bay Basketball Coaches Association Senior East vs. West All-Star game will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Tampa Prep. Admission is $5. At halftime, there will be a dunk and three-point shooting contest. Tampa Prep seniors Jamal Cherry and Jay Bowie, who on Saturday played in the Class 2A state championship game, highlight the West All-Star team while Newsome seniors Samal Shepherd and Jake Hodges, who carried the program to the 5A region final, highlight the East team.

On Friday, the 25th annual Wilkes & McHugh United Negro College Fund All-Star High School Basketball Classic will tip-off at Jefferson at 6 p.m. Admission is $5. The girls game will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the boys. There will also be a dunk and three-point shooting contest.

Several of the top girls players in the county, including Tampa Catholic seniors Colette Eule and Sarah Brennan, who guided the Crusaders to their first 3A state championship, and Jefferson guard Jade Givens, who helped lead the Dragons to the 4A state semifinals, are expected to participate in the girls game.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ coach Raheem Morris is expected to make a guest appearance and deliver a $10,000 check to the UNCF, which will be divided to five athletes at the end of the event. The UNCF will also award one girls player and one boys player with scholarship check based on the individuals grade point average.

The late Dr. Sam Horton, a retired administrator for Hillsborough County schools and a former president of the Hillsborough chapter of the NAACP, founded the fundraiser 25 years ago. On Friday, his grandson, Michael Warren, the Alonso girls basketball coach, will coach the West Girls All-Star team. Dexter Bryant will coach the East Girls team. Jefferson boys coach and Blake boys coach Winston Davis will coach the West Boys Team while Tampa Bay Tech coach Adrian Johnson will coach the East Boys team.
