Henry, Bucs Doesn’t Appear To Be A Match

TAMPA - I had a conversation with Chris Henry’s agent a little while ago. He said there are actually two NFL teams that are interested in giving Henry a tryout. The Bucs, however, are not one of them.

No surprise there. Though the Bucs are on record as saying they will consider signing anybody who they think can make their football team better, signing the troubled Henry always seemed like a stretch of the biggest proportions.

It’s not just the possibility (or should we say likelihood) that Henry will wind up missing practice and playing time because of his latest run in with the law. There’s also the fact that the Bucs seem quite content to go with what they already have at Henry’s position.

That, in fact, has sort of been their take all offseason. They did virtually nothing to address their apparent need at receiver during free agency, then followed up by doing virtually nothing to improve that position during the draft.

Sure, they drafted Dexter Jackson in the second round, but Jackson is something of a project at receiver. He was drafted primarily to improve the return game and with the hope or expectation that he will one day develop into a regular contributor at split end.

The plan it seems is to lean more heavily on Michael Clayton and Maurice Stovall at flanker and to hope that one of either Paris Warren or Chad Lucas can earn the right to take some snaps away from Joey Galloway at split end.

It’s not a bad approach, but if it doesn’t work out the Bucs will have opened themselves up to a lot of criticism for not doing more to improve what many perceive to be the biggest area of need on their team.

Hi Roy, How do you figure that the Bucs would “lead more heavily on Clayton”???  He has had one good year and three years as a BUST!!  He simply can’t catch a football!!  What other team in the NFL would take him??  You must be trying to suck up to Gruden, he keeps playing Clayton even when he knows that he cannot catch a football!!

Roy,

Nice article.Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to sit around the T.V. with my Billy beer and watch ESPN. Your articles are always insightful and informative. Yes...guys....if I had the time to watch TV all day, I probably would be informed too. But for the rest of us, Roy is top notch

Jake, Henderson was horrible last year and couldn’t catch anything, Stallworth has to be the most overrated wide receiver in the league and has only ever had a couple good games, seriously anyone could have had success in the Pats system last year but Stallworth still didn’t, oh and Berrian might have been a decent addition as a #2 receiver but he was snatched up so fast by the Vikings it didn’t seem like he was considering anyone else and Gruden and Allen can’t be blamed if a player doesn’t have any desire to play here. The o-line and running game will be even better this year which should provide more opportunities for the passing game.

Greg,
Agreed on Walker,Johnson and Hackett. But I believe recievers available such as Donte Stallworth, Bernard Berrien, or Devery Henderson could have helped this team. Bruce felt that they werent worth the price they were asking. Well apparently 3 other NFL Gm’s did.  We will see how this works out but I am skeptical at best about the WR position on the Bucs.

Roy should do the weather, at least he’d have a 50% shot of being right from time to time.

Gee what a surprise.  I actually read about this on ESPN.com (that Henry was interested in NO or Dallas) yesterday, so great reporting Roy, it took a call to Henry’s agent to find out what James Walker already reported on.  It’s also no surprise because the Bucs already signed Antonio Bryant and drafted D Jackson, but we already knew about that as well.
We also knew that Jackson was a project and was drafted to improve the return game and probably was not starting day one across from Galloway.
So in summary, thanks for telling us what we already knew.
How much is the trib paying you? Cause I could us a night job that doesn’t eat up too much of my time.

Roy, let’s hope you’re wrong about the idea of Dexter Jackson being a project at receiver.  I think the Bucs see him as more of a Santana Moss or Antwaan Randle-El, someone who can fit in the slot and burn slants and posts all over the field.  Tampa’s wide receiver situation is too precarious to not use him at least as a slot receiver early on, and his speed is too good.

I think that all the Wide Recievers and TE’s in Camp. If Tampa didn’t have Antonio Bryant in camp. Then take a chance on Henry. Remember Tampa did have some WR’s that went down prior to last season and I think that if this year Dexter Jackson brings the ball back on Kick Off’s and Punts. And Occasionly a few passes during the season. Jackson can go at a slower pace. Remember he was from a small college that he was thrust into limelight when Appl. State Upset Michigan. Also Doug Williams had an Eye for QB’s. I think that QB from San Deigo could progress at a slow pace, And next year he could have an Impact battle for the backup QB next year. I though giving a fan view point of the offensive side of the ball. GO BUCS

Just like I thought. I knew when Roy started this speculation that we would not be interested. I guess we will see what happens, I’ve been a Buc fan for a long time however still worried about this upcoming season after the NYG playoff game last year, tough “D” as usual. Please someone step up on offense and be this playmaker Gruden and Co. keep talking about.

Greg in Bradenton want to start Parrish(?) or fire Gruden. Well that is just as brilliant as your master plan being for Parrish(?) or Lucas to unseat Galloway.

With that said, I would really love to see Clayton excell towards his potential.

Posted by  Mike, Clearwater on 05/08  at  04:55 PM

Who is Parrish? And what TD’s has he scored that counted?

Posted by  Greg, Bradenton on 05/08  at  04:37 PM

If Gruden does not start Parrish Warren in place of Clayton he should be fired! All the guy does is score TD’s while Clayton self-destructs.

Posted by  Greg, Bradenton on 05/08  at  04:32 PM

Dexter Jackson something of a project at split end. Come on guys this is not rocket science, it is football. Have the QB tell Jackson what route to run when a play is called and lets see if his speed works! Gruden you are a dumass!

Posted by  Zipmeister, Tampa on 05/08  at  04:30 PM

Yea just like the lightning saying they will stick with the goaltenders they have. Yea that will work! Last place!!

I almost feel sorry for Roy. I think if I was him I would convince my boss to end the comment section on my articles. High comedy fellas! Keep up the good work.

we told you that when you first came out with that story about henry possibly headed to the bucs. why has it taken you a week to figure that out.Do you get paid a salary?

Posted by  Grey Goose, Tampa on 05/08  at  03:11 PM

Watch out there big cat, dont back over your own foot.............. Has anyone reminded you lately just how bad you suck at your job? You create speculation then act like you knew that it wouldnt happen all along, try doing food articles maybe you wont screw that up.

Posted by  Greg M, Tampa, FL on 05/08  at  03:04 PM

Roy, what would you have had the Bucs do differently? Give a bunch of money to an injured player like Javon Walker? Or how about washed up players like Bruce or unproven players like Hackett and Byrant Johnson seriously the free agent class and draft class was weak in terms of wide receivers.  So was there really anything out there that would have been an upgrade? Oh, and we never had a chance at Chad Johnson, Roy Williams, or Boldin
