Hellickson, Jennings make Topps All-Rookie team

Rays pitcher Jeremy Hellickson added another rookie honor to his collection on Wednesday. And teammate Desmond Jennings was similarly honored.

The Rays right-hander, named the American League Rookie of the Year this past season, was named to Topps’ 53rd annual major-league rookie all-star team.

Hellickson, who went 13-10 with a 2.95 ERA and struck out 117 in 189 innings, was named Topps’ starting rookie pitcher. Jennings, who stole 20 bases while hitting 10 homers and driving in 25 runs, was named one of the three rookie outfielders. Jennings finished seventh in the AL rookie of the year balloting.

Topps has named a rookie team since 1959, and longtime collectors will remember the gold trophy that appeared on a player’s card during his second year, signifying his recognition from Topps. Wille McCovey’s second card issued is a good example of a player so honored, and so is Pete Rose’s 1965 Topps card.
