SARASOTA He wasn’t facing Derek Jeter or Mark Teixeira on Tuesday. Still, Jeremy Hellickson looked good in striking out the only four batters he faced to end the game.
Hellickson entered in the bottom of the eighth with two outs and a runner on third. He struck out Josh Bell to end the inning, then fanned the side in the ninth.
Comparing Tuesday to Hellickson’s outing Friday against the Yankees (11/3, one hit, two strikeouts), Maddon said it was “equally impressive.”
“I felt good both times. It’s all I can ask for both times,” Hellickson said. “The main thing is, I came out and threw strikes with runners on base like that. That’s what I had to do both times.”
Hellickson has six strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings this spring.
