USF men’s basketball coach Stan Heath is one of five former Tom Izzo assistants now leading Division I programs.
And like the rest of those with close ties to the Michigan State program, Heath is keeping a close eye on whether Izzo leaves the Spartans to become the next coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“Whether LeBron stays or not is the million dollar question, I’m sure, for Tom,’’ Heath said in a SI.com wire service story. “I remember how much Tom wrestled with the opportunity the Atlanta Hawks gave him. But that wasn’t a great situation like Cleveland has with a Michigan State guy as the owner and one of the top players in the game potentially on the team, so I can only imagine how hard he’s thinking about this.’‘
Heath was an assistant at Michigan State under Izzo from 1996-2001.
Who are the other former Izzo assistants currently leading Division I programs? (Just in case you wondered who the other former Spartan assistans that will be mentioned as possible replacements in case Izzo leaves).
Tom Crean (Indiana), Brian Gregory (Dayton), Doug Wojcik (Tulsa) and Jim Boylen (Utah) are the others.
