Armwood coach Sean Callahan said early last week he thought the Hawks offense was a bit ahead of the defense in terms of being prepared to start the season.
While both units performed well in a Kickoff Classic win over Middleton, the offense was particularly sharp.
Armwood’s first-team unit seemed to be clicking on all cylinders, scoring on five of its first six possessions against the Tigers (four touchdowns and one field goal). Both sophomore running back Matt Jones (three touchdowns) and junior quarterback Josh Grady (two touchdown passes) had big games.
And the unit hasn’t slowed down since.
Hawks offensive coordinator Chris Taylor said the first-team offense was nearly flawless working against the scout-team defense in Wednesday’s practice as the Hawks prepare for Friday’s season-opener at Newsome.
“The kids are executing,” Taylor said. “I’m pleased with the progression.”
