WR Karel Hamilton became the first football player from Strawberry Crest to land a Division I scholarship, when this week he orally committed to Samford University in Alabama.
Hamilton, a first-team all-Tribune pick, caught a school-record 59 balls for 948 yards and 10 touchdowns while helping the Chargers improve to a 4-6 record after going 1-9 in 2011.
Hamilton chose Samford over Chattanooga and Coastal Carolina.
“(Samford) felt like an extension of my family,” Hamilton said. “I feel really good about it.”
