USF will need a come-from-behind effort in the second half to reach bowl eligibility.
The Bulls enter halftime trailing West Virginia, 13-7, in a nationally-televised Big East Conference game at Raymond James Stadium.
The Mountaineers first 10 points came on a pair of USF blunders. The Bulls had a punt blocked that was recovered at the USF 5, but a good stand from the defense limited West Virginia to a field goal.
Then, defensive back Lamar Miller intercepted a B.J. Daniels pass and returned in 52 yard for a touchdown, putting the Mountaineers ahead 10-0 at the 8:20 mark.
The Bulls were able to mount something late in the half to get back into the game, putting together an nine-play, 80-yard touchdown drive. Receiver Sterling Griffin made a nice play to haul in a 20-yard scoring pass from quarterback B.J. Daniels. It was originally ruled that Griffin had come down out of bounds, but the call was reversed after being reviewed.
West Virginia was able to tack on a field goal with 22 seconds remaining before the break to go back up by six.
USF outgained the Mountaineers, 195-138 in the opening half. Daniels finished 10-for-23 for 103 yards with a touchdown and an interception, while his counterpart, West Virginia’s Geno Smith, was 10-for-15 for 75 yards.
West Virginia will get the ball first to begin the second half.
