EAST HARTFORD, Conn. For the second straight game, USF is heading into the locker room at halftime behind on the scoreboard.
Things haven’t been pretty for either team through two quarters of action at Rentschler Field, but Connecticut leads 6-3 behind a pair of Dave Teggart field goals, the last a 46-yarder with nine seconds remaining before the break.
USF’s offense has managed just 75 yards on 23 plays and turned the ball over twice in Huskies territory, both turnovers coming from quarterback B.J. Daniels.
The first came on a bad pitch on the opening play of the second quarter when the Bulls had second and goal at the UConn 7. The second came later in the frame when Daniels was picked off at the Huskies 20, just his second interception of the season. Daniels finished the first half 4-for-8 passing for just 32 yards.
The lone bright spot for the USF offense in the first half was running back Darrell Scott, who has 54 yards on 10 carries through the first two quarters.
Luckily for the Bulls, the Huskies offense hasn’t been much better. Connecticut also has a pair of turnovers and amassed just 143 total yards. Running back Lyle McCombs has led the way with 81 yards on 18 carries.
USF defensive end Ryne Giddins had a monster first half, collecting nine tackles, including three for a loss, two sacks and forced fumble and a pass breakup. The Bulls defense had five sacks total in the first half.
