When Tyler Guy transferred from Zephyrhills to Freedom during the offseason, the 6-foot-4, 215 pound quarterback was unsure if he could fit in to the Patriots offense.
So far, so good.
Guy is one of the top passers in Hillsborough County this season, completing 52 percent of his passes (33 of 63) for 576 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions. Last season, Guy totaled 1,417 yards with seven touchdowns at Zephyrhills.
Just three games into the 2009 season (Freedom’s game versus King was canceled due to weather), Guy has accumulated nearly half of his junior season stats, and is two wins shy of tying his record as starting quarterback for the Bulldogs in 2008. Zephyrhills was 4-6 last year while Freedom is 2-1 heading into a bye week.
“(The coaches) did a great job of teaching me what they wanted me do to,” Guy said. “We ran the ‘I’ formation at Zephyrhills and we run the spread (offense) here and being a quarterback, that’s more of what I like.”
Freedom is averaging 31.0 points per game this season.
“We definitely can score some points” Guy said.
Guy doesn’t consider himself a mobile quarterback, but can run when the situation calls for it. In his team’s 30-12 win over Gaither on Friday, he scored on a rushing touchdown.
“I can do either, but I prefer the pocket,” he said. “I’m not a 4.4 guy, but I did have 60 yards rushing last week.”
Guy said Georgia Tech and Iowa are some of the schools that have shown interest.
