Chalk up another blow to Gulf’s already struggling program.
Coach Tom Carter confirmed to the Tampa Tribune that junior OL/DL Bruce Hector is transferring to Robinson, as his family is moving from Pasco County to be closer to his mother’s work.
“He wasn’t happy,” said Carter, who is gearing up for his first season as head coach of the Buccaneers. “He didn’t say much. ... He grew up here (in New Port Richey), went to middle school here, played two years of varsity football (at Gulf). ... This kind of thing just makes me want to jump off the water tower.”
Carter said Hector had hit the weight room hard this summer, preparing himself for what might be a tough season for Gulf, as the Buccaneers had just 20-plus players during spring drills. Carter says he can’t say how many he’ll return, but with Robinson also losing many players, as well, Hector looks to step right in and put his bid in to become a starter for the Knights.
“Not only do a I lose a guy that worked hard in the weight room all summer, I lose his experience and I lose a quality kid,” Carter said. “I’m more than sorry to see him go because no one is really happy about losing Bruce.”
