Gulf athletic director Travis DeWalt told the Tampa Tribune on Wednesday morning that the school has hired Jeffery Shank as the Environmental Science and Biology teacher and that he will coach the boys basketball team and serve as a football assistant coach for the upcoming 2011-12 school year.
Shank replaces boys basketball coach Buck DeWalt, who led the Buccaneers to a 10-12 record this past season and a 17-32 record over two seasons. Shank will join first-year football coach Tom Carter’s staff, as Gulf looks to overcome low numbers and compete in the newly formed Class 5A-6. Shank graduated from Allen Park High in Allen Park, Michigan in 1998 and attended Eastern Michigan University and Cleveland State University, where he graduated in 2006. Shank also taught science at Hernando from 2007-10, as well as coached football and basketball. Last school year, Shank was a science teacher at Seminole and coached football, basketball and track.
