TAMPA – It didn’t take long for the Jon Gruden-to-Tennessee talk to grow into a wildfire. It’s already the No. 1 topic on sports talk radio here in Tampa and throughout most of Tennessee.
We shouldn’t be surprised. The University of Tennessee is really hot for Gruden. Folks both inside and outside the Volunteers’ program have made it clear that Gruden is their No. 1 choice to replace Phil Fullmer as head coach.
If they’re smart, though, the Tennessee faithful will start focusing right now on another candidate because Gruden will not be their next football coach. No chance, none, zilch.
Gruden just signed on for another three years with the Bucs last spring and while contracts can be broken it’s not in the Bucs business manual to let coaches out of their contracts. Not even for a college job.
This is an organization that wouldn’t let special teams coach Richard Bisaccia interview for a job with Charlie Weiss at Notre Dame a few years back. Do you really think they’re going to let Gruden go coach at Tennessee? No way.
The only way Gruden leaves here and goes to Tennessee is if he first goes to the Glazers and tells them he’s had it here and wants out so that he can go coach the kids at Tennessee.
That’s not likely to happen, though, because Gruden isn’t really cut out for the college game and he probably knows it. Can you see Gruden trying to install his offense with a bunch of college kids?
There are six- and 10-year NFL veterans who can’t pick up his complex schemes and he has very little patience for them. He certainly won’t have any more patience with a red-shirt freshman.
He won’t have any patience for parents, boosters, school administrators or alumni either. This is nothing more than a fantasy dreamed up by Tennessee fans eager for a change.
And while it makes for great speculation and will surely fill hour after hour of dead space on local talk radio shows, it won’t happen. Not this time, not no way, not no how.

One word for this article….nutz…let’s get back to the basics of NFL!

Very few NFL Head coaches are as suited for the NFL game as Jon Gruden is. To all of you Gruden bashers, listen up? After the Bucs gave up 2 first and 2 second round draft picks to get him, Gruden and Allen are FINALLY getting to build their team. Everything prior to this year, except maybe the Super Bowl team, has been treading water. I don’t think you fans here in Tampa Bay realize what a great coach and staff, that Gruden is and has. Big time coaches make big time calls in big time games. That was as great a coaching job and win, as Gruden and his staff have made here in Tampa, since his tenure began. Personally, I hope he remains in Tampa for many years.

Michael Harris, I agree with you 100%. Chucky is my favorite NFL coach, even if I am partial to the Bucs. I hope these latest injuries to Graham & A. Smith are minor. It may be Cadillac time.

Gruden coaching in college would be like Spurrier coaching in the pros…a diaster waiting to happen.

Where do you get your info?? I just went on the website for the Knoxville newspaper and there is a survey asking readers which potential coach would be their favorite and Gruden was NOT one of the five listed. Go figure…..

Gruden would rather go fry wings at Hooters before he went back to a college team. Besides, he will be coach for the Buccaneers for the next 14 years.

Well I heard different on WDAE Anti- Buc station

give me a break people…gruden isnt goin anywhere…this team is molding together and i like the direction its goin…this team has depth for the first time in a long time…players are stepping up at every position at the right times…but the penaltys have to go…way to many…this bye comes at a good time…some of the banged up players will get some extra rest…getting stovall and askew back will really help this offense…GO BUCS!!!!!

this has to be one of the most intelligent string of comments ever posted here. at least someone knows about football. gruden will be here for awhile. go bucs!

some info for gruden haters….That 2002 season coincided with an NFL realignment that created the NFC South. In the first six years of that division’s existence, the Buccaneers won three division titles; every other team in the South has won it just once. That accomplishment is even more impressive when matched with the first 26 seasons of Tampa Bay football. The Bucs won three division titles in their first six years under Gruden; they had won one in the previous 20 years.

Suggest removalAre you going to post that same old-tired monologue in every single article? Trust me on this one, it isn’t that good or informative for that matter. Those of us that aren’t fair weather or casual fans know the numbers, there’s no need to keep on telling us, it gets very redundant.

You guys are all missing the obvious. why would someone take a 50% pay cut and go live in a place that has cold winters.
Suggest removalPor (Robert D) on November 04, 2008 (Suggest removal)
Bucsfan that used to be a Gruden fan. Where is that high-powered offense??
Suggest removalWhere is that 2nd superbowl ring??
Where is our next coach??

Watching ESPN this morning and there is NO NO NO mention of Gruden being a hot candidate for the UT job….. this is a NON-STORY!

Thank you, Brandon VA!!
wacboyguppy thinks he’s the only one with a Bucs history book.
And for the record, I don’t want Gruden going anywhere. He’s better off in Tampa than TN and definitely better off with the Bucs than Hooters…I like my wings at extra hot at The Press Box…

All of you Gruden bashers need to shut up, turn your radios off, and realize what we have. Would you rather be 3 and 6? I could care less what “The Big Dog” says what he knows, but he can’t tell us (just like he knew that the Bucs were going to be sold). I’ll take Gruden and his quirks as long as we are winning and the players want to play for him. GO BUCS!!

Well considering he has sold there house. If you look in this past SUndays paper in the houses section/ They sold there house for 1.5 mil . SO who know this is all could be true. Well who would they replace him with.
Well hopefully we can get one more superbowl win from him…

To all you Buc and Gruden bashers!First of all, the super bowl team was not what you think. That was Dungy’s team?I’m so tired of hearing you non educated so called Buc fans.MR.SAPP,LYNCH, AND BROOKES were Sam Wyche draft picks. So the heart of that defese, the Big 3, DUNGY INHERITED.He did not want Sapp in Minn.Vikes, smoked to much pot in college.(U.of Miami, bad boy)we’ll pass on him. When Gruden came he went out and got 7 free agents on offense,do you remember,Mr.McCardell,wr.,Mr.Joe Jurev.wr.,Ken Dilger,te.,Ricky Dudley te.,Mike Pittman rb.,Roman Oben Lt.protected our Qb.‘s back side rather well,Kerry Jenkins Lg.Now tell me who’s team was it.I state my point.

TB/Gruden fan here, but even bigger SEC fan. Vols Scout board has plenty of people wanting him. While I can’t imagine how he would pair his offense down for college, it would make for a new challenge in his life and they have relatives, property and ties to UT. Pro football fans are lame compared to SEC fans.

Everyone said there was no way Saban would leave Miami for Alabama. I think it is a long shot but there are certain factors. Wife a Univ. of Tn grad from East Tennessee. Recently purchased property 45 minutes from Knoxville. Stranger things have happened

I say again; he would be giving up $3 million per year. No way!!!!! Maybe in a few years when he is set financially, but not now. Economics 101 guys and gals.
Suggest removalPor (Todd White) on November 04, 2008 (Suggest removal)
You know absolutely nothing about what you are talking about. Let me guess, seasoned journalist who’s seen this play out before, same story, same ending. Somehow I found the small facts in the story that weren’t muddied by opinion, arrogance, and self-rightousness.
Truth is, Gruden’s contract has a clause that includes UT as a school that he can leave for. Add to it that they would’ve had a hard time preventing him from entertaining any college offer and you just wrote a bunch of cocky nothing.
Second, a $3 million paycut. Are you freakin serious. He makes $4.3 million and the talk is UT is offering $5 million. This isn’t 2001.
I bet you your stinky job that Gruden is the next coach of UT.
