TAMPA - A lot of Buccaneers were talking about what Chris Simms had to say about Coach Jon Gruden on Tuesday. Gruden wasn’t one of them.
Gruden calmly denied my request to speak on the matter, saying, “No, not today.’‘
No surprise there. Gruden is not mandated to speak after every off-season workout, and with this being a real hot-button topic he probably wants to take some to formulate a response.
While Gruden remained silent, though, others spoke. None expressed any surprise at Simms comments, but most said it was simply a personal matter between Simms and the coach and wasn’t unlike a lot of other situations they’ve encountered in the past.
“Everybody’s entitled to his own opinion,’’ WR Ike Hilliard said when asked about Simms comments. “We’d like everybody to be here, because we’re all teammates and we all love him but we’ll see what happens going forward.’‘
“You just have let it go and go about doing your own job,’’ WR Michael Clayton said. “As players our job is to work hard and do our part. We have to stay away from injuries and let whatever happens happen.’‘
In other Bucs news, there has been a settlement in the Jake Plummer case, and Plummer has come out the loser. A day before he would have gone to a hearing on the matter he agreed to give back half of the $7 million signing bonus he got when he signed his last contract with the Broncos.
That money doesn’t go to the Broncos, though; it goes to the Bucs. They won the rights to it when they traded for Plummer last offseason. The fact that Plummer never played a down for them doesn’t matter. When players voluntarily fail to play out their entire contract, they run the risk of being asked to give back some of the bonus money they received upon signing that contract. That’s what happened with Plummer.
The money the Bucs get in this case will be applied to next year’s salary cap. That may seem like a big deal, but keep in mind that the Bucs had $45 million worth of cap space at the start of the current off-season and have sat on most of it. So what did the Bucs really achieve in all this? Well, they got about $3.5 million for a seventh-round draft pick. That’s not bad. You’ve got to think, though, that they’d much rather have the player. That, though, was never going to happen.

CVal, get your facts straight before you call other people retarded. Simms was not forced back into the game. It was his choice. He did not receive a transfucion. He received an IV because the doctors thought he was suffering from dehydration. That’s what his symptoms showed. the injury was not known until after the game. Bucs hero? hardly. He did what he got paid to do. He needs to stop whining and man up. If he wants to leave, good riddance. He never won a big game going all the way back to his Texas days. With that attitude, he probably never will. And I was born and raised in Tampa, a fan since 76 and a season tix holder. So what?

Can we get Jake to make the check out to Jeff Garcia, Ernest Graham & Greg White? Then everybody is just one big happy family again….almost. Sorry Simms, your the odd man out. Better yet, can we just get all the players to honor the Contracts they signed? That’s the ticket. Let’s give the money to the

What $3.5 million could do for them. Even $20. Anything

why even comment?? the guy has stunk since he’s been here…sat on the bench
‘seasoning’ for 2 or 3 years…got put in and COULDN’T THROW THE BALL PAST THE LINE!! (most batted balls).he’s owed nothing..they tried to trade him and no one was interested(HMMM)!BEGONE LOSER!!

Give Simms a break. The kid gave everything he had to the Bucs. Maybe it wasn’t good enough, but nobody should question his heart or the sacrifices he made for the team. After all, he has a 10 inch scar down his chest. He didn’t tear an ACL or something, he literally was close to dying ... FOR THE BUCS!!! And this is how they treat him. It’s shameless. Gruden/Allen are wrong. They should release Simms. He deserves better. Plus, what team is going to trade for Simms knowing the Bucs will NEVER keep him on their roster this year.

It’s good to be a fan. It’s bad to be a fascist. These comments remind me of the attitude of Hitler youth that took a war to put down. Gruden took a man that had just had a blood transfusion and ordered him back in the game behind a line of rookies and has beens that couldn’t block your grandmother. He took hit after vicious hit that nearly killed him, but he fought on. Simms is a Bucs hero, so shut your retarded mouths! I’ve been a fan since 76 but I am ashamed of you and of the gutless coach who only cares about his ego.

Simms is a whiner. You have a problem with the coach, show up and prove him wrong.
As for the Plummer money, it seems like a great move. $3.5 million in cap space to sign a free agent seems better to me than the potential of a 7th round pick. (Wasn’t Gradkowski a 7th rounder?) I wonder if that was the plan all along. If it was, smart move. Now just use the freaking money to sign someone.

This is ridiculous. Chris Simms wasn’t going to play for us anyway. This is a non-issue as we are set with our QBs for next season. Simms is just stirring the pot to try and force a trade. But I don’t think that the player should dictate a trade. Simms really has no bargaining power. He’s not the starter and clearly not the backup, so he wants out. Everyone understands this. The only thing he is doing is pissing off Gruden and making his teammates answer these stupid questions.
RE: The Plummer money, good, more money for us to spend next year (if needed).

Just as important, Simms’ story doesn’t add up. If you go back and read his comments after the Miami pre-season game last year, they are in total conflict with what he told Cummings yesterday:
“It wasn’t the most productive night, but it was great to be back out there,” Simms said. “Physically I’m fine. As far as throwing the ball, I’m nowhere near 100 percent yet, but it is getting better week to week.”
“Coach said he might throw me in there for a series just to get me out there, or in his words, ‘smell the huddle again. I smelled it. It smelled just as I remembered. It was good.”

I think Clayton said it best. He hasn’t played well, at least as far as receiving goes, but he doesn’t whine and blame his coach for not babying him. He says be a man and play ball. That’s a football player for you.
Unless the Glazers are posting under many pseudonyms here, I can’t figure out how so many people who watch the games think Simms is good. He’s not. I will repeat the fact that he can’t get the ball over the D-line with any decent consistency, but we should all know that. Pay attention to the games if you’re going to post after these articles and defend some while bashing others. Being informed is a prerequisite for giving opinions about people’s abilities.

Glad to see the comments are accurate this time. Simms gets paid big Bucs to hold a clipboard all year after be awful in preseason. Did anyone see him in preseason? Now he whines….man up Chris-sy. Gruden…bad for wanting to cut him. Gruden… bad for keeping and not trading him. Deal with the professional aspect of the game Simms. Maybe Chuckie would like to see if your less awful this preseason. Stop the talk, and show what you can do on the field! Period!

Chris….you need to COMMUNICATE with your coach. Don’t turn into a public whiner.

While I’m sure that Simm’s stories are true, I find it very unprofessional and childish, to put your problem’s with your coach into the public media. Be a man, if you have a problem, keep it between you and your coach.
Simm’s should be thankful the Bucs didn’t cut him after the 06 season, because most teams would’ve. He got a year to rehab and he got paid pretty well too.
Simm’s also wasn’t that great of a QB, he threw a lot of INT and how many balls were batted down? I think the Bucs, and Gruden gave him plenty of time to show what kind of player he really was.

Agree, Gruden stay mum for now but stand your ground.
I think when it comes to QBs, if you have talent Gruden brings it out, if you are not NFL material then Gruden gets into your head. That may be why he has done well with veteran QBs, because they normally don’t last long in the NFL if they don’t have talent.

3.5 million, babeee, greta move by the Bucs and Glazers. 7th rounders seem like throwaways or camp fodder anyway. To convert one into this money is a great business move. Plummer was a washed up guy anyway, He would have showed up been a third stinger and hit the road right about now.
Posted by TERESA BAXTER, Atlanta on 06/10 at 01:38 PM
Stand your ground Gruden!!!!! How can this team make a trade or anything if Simms won’t go out and show what he can do?? Whiney baby. I WANT someone to pay me millions to sit on my butt and do nothing, and I won’t even complain.

What simpering venom, william. A hero is a man who sacrifices himself for his team or his unit. Gruden could have considered the injury and yes he did have a blood transfusion as was reported in the papers at the time, you uninformed moron. Sims proved he was tough. You have proved that you have a big mouth. As a Marine, I respect what he did. Someone like you and Gruden know nothing about honor and loyalty, so I don’t expect you will ever understand. Good luck with a new team, Chris. Don’t listen to the fascist propaganda.
